Le solin doit remonter plus haut si la surface basse peut recevoir une accumulation de neige, et non seulement de l'eau de pluie.

Thanks, André - although your explanation makes sense, it looks as if "snow guard" fits into my sentence better. Instructions for building: it must be fitted higher if there is a snow guard present - i.e. height to be confirmed... I think?
