A clearance between a structure and the sewer main is required for the following reasons: To allow access for maintenance equipment to inspect manholes and house connections and for the possible repair / replacement of the sewer main

Sewer Protection zone is defined as the area within a minimum horizontal clearance from PUB's existing sewers and pumping mains within which no structures either permanent or temporary should be built unless the Director, Water Reclamation (Network) Department has given the written permission to do so (see figure 1).
The minimum horizontal distances around the sewers and pumping mains within which the PUB requires prior approval of any works are defined as follows:

Maintain a two foot clearance zone from exposedutility lines and bore away from exposed utility linewhen possible.

Typically a circle of about 3 foot diameter by 6 foot high centered above the manhole cover shall be maintained as a clear zone. This clear zone allows us proper equipment and personnel access for maintenance and emergency needs
