Dziękuję, Geopiet. Przejrzałam właśnie odnośniki i dalej nie jestem przekonana o tym, że "catch a chill" znaczy" przeziębić się... Czytał Pan teksty, do których linki pojawiają się na tej stronie? Wygląda na to, że ci ludzie piszą o tym, że zmarzli, przemarzli, przemokli lub coś w tym sensie... <br>Żeby było jasne - po czterech latach mieszkania na Wyspach nie uważam się za fachowca. Doceniam wagę słowa i konieczność kształcenia się, a także dokładnego czytania/badania tekstów.
Co na to słowniki? Proszę:

Do Polangmar'a... Jestem od czterech lat na Wyspach i jeszcze nie słyszałam, żeby ktoś powiedział "I caught a chill", żeby znaczyło to "Przeziębiłem się". A tu ciągle ktoś jest przeziębiony i tubylcy mówią "I've got a cold". A pytająca potrzebuje przetłumaczyć tekst dla Anglików (chyba;). :)

Do Polangmara "Catch a chill" nie zawsze trzeba tłumaczyć jako "przeziębić się". There's more than one way to skin a cat. "Temperature: avoid sleeping in the line of a draught (or minimise the source of the draught) because you may catch a chill in the back or neck, which could lead to stiffness and dysfunction. W podanym tu przykładzie też przetłumaczyłbyś "przeziębić się"? Naprawdę wolę opierać się na "native English" i "native ears".

Proponuję porozmawiać o właściwej interpretacji polskiego wyrażenia, które interesuje Pytającą. Jeśli zmoknę i efektem jest przeziębienie, jeśli mieszkanie mam niedogrzane i marznę w nocy, bądź też upiwszy się jesienią na ławce przysnę i obudzę się skostniały, to nie powiem 'przewiało mnie'. 'Przewianie' IMHO powinniśmy rezerwować dla efektu działania przeciągów i wiatru, natomiast 'catch a chill' jest bardziej ogólne, bo 'przemarznąć' można na kilka różnych sposobów, na przykład podanych przeze mnie w poprzednim zdaniu.

2003 basically got up and couldn't move my neck and on other occasions very similar experiences.
Main problem is did the pain come one morning after waking up ???, strange but sometimes it just appears to be the way you sleep. I will make a few other contributors unhappy by suggesting seeing a chiropractor, but in all honesty i think it helps if they know your body well. I know this sounds fairly weak for something sounding so severe and muscular but it's possible it could be only a chill and then it's just a case of wearing a scarf for a couple of days (had this exact problem a little while back and believe me felt way more severe than "just a chill").

agree John Fenz : Polangmar: As I read them, geopiet's links provide material concerning the validity of the proverbial claim "you can catch a cold by catching a chill". But by discussing the claim, they in fact confirm that the phrase is commonly used.

Generalnie jest to wyrażenie powszechnie stosowane w codziennym użyciu i nie jest dwuznaczne. ;-) Podziwiam za upór. ;-) Dziękuję za zmianę opinii i za "agree" :-) Pozdrawiam.
agree Khrystene (X) : 'caught a chill' - Basically it's an age old wives tale that is still popular in Poland, which is why ppl overdress and swelter in the heat and whine about 'catching a chill' from a draft... frustrating as hell when you're someone who likes fresh air! :P
