German term

Vorzeigegeld, Landungsgeld

German to English Social Sciences History Jewish emigration during the Nazi era
from a German web site documenting Jewish emigration from Germany 1933 - 1941:

"Aufnahmeländer wie Brasilien oder Argentinien erhoben aus Angst um ihre wirtschaftliche Stabilität **Vorzeige- oder Landungsgelder**, bei deren Höhe man einen gewissen Wohlstand der jüdischen Immigranten voraussetzte."

After rather extensive research, I have neither found corresponding "official" English-language terms for either German term, only lengthy descriptions or definitions, nor have I found any indication as to what the precise difference between the two terms might be.

I have preliminarily "solved" the matter by leaving the German terms in the text and adding a footnote explaining the concept.

Can anyone help by providing authoritative, documented information about the two terms and the actual difference between them?
I don't think any "educated guesses" would really be very helpful!

2) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haavara_Agreement
3) GoogleBooks: "Judenverfolgung in Deutschland--eine innere Angelegenheit?" by Fritz Kieffer

Also, if I'm not mistaken, Mr. MacDonogh did translate "Landungsgeld"--as "entry cost." See 2nd link Helen posted. I don't agree that you should keep the words in German, as has been suggested. See similar comment below; your examples are Brazil (Portuguese) and Argentina (Spanish).

I'd be grateful if one day, someone could explain to me why many ENS believe that German compounds must have some special meaning attached to them. If I say your "Vorjahresverhalten" was bad, don't embark on a quest to try and find an EN compound. A comparable ex.: "Handbuch der Ausländer- und Zuwanderungspolitik: von Afghanistan bis Zypern" by Wolfgang Gieler [GoogleBooks again]. It says 200 dollars as "Landungsgeld" in CAN.

EN version:
"All immigrants [...] were required to have $200 in their possession before being permitted entry"
https://www.pier21.ca/research/immigration-history/immigrati...

Though "in possession" may not work; likely was a piece of paper.

Proof of funds is perfect.
Mair A-W (PhD) Jan 20, 2018:
In theory at least: Landungsgeld is something like "shore dues" (but that's usually for goods) or "landing fee" (but that's usually for the boat/plane), and paid to the country you're arriving in. Vorzeigegeld you prove you have, then keep. As to whether to translate it -- the countries "wie Brasilien oder Argentinien" presumably *do* have non-German terms for it, ie it's kinda already been translated in your context; proof of (sufficient) funds is usual (e.g. Canada = proof of funds).
philgoddard Jan 20, 2018:
If you're sure both words mean the same thing, you've answered your own question. It just takes a few more words to say it in English than in German. I don't see any point in leaving it untranslated.
Helen Shiner Jan 20, 2018:
@beermat If documents, such as this https://www.jura.uni-bonn.de/fileadmin/Fachbereich_Rechtswis... do not attempt to translate the term, but instead circumscribe it, I think your present solution is probably the best. It is also not translated in reputable history books, such as this one: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=KJueBAAAQBAJ&pg=PT164&lp... Landungsgeld gets very few hits in any case. Both terms probably need explanation anyway, so unless your client insists ...

to philgoddard: Minimum amounts in cash a foreign national has to verifiably hold on arrival (in this case by ship) to be permitted to enter a country.
philgoddard Jan 20, 2018:
Could you tell us what you discovered from your research? Otherwise we have to do it again. What definitions did you find?
There's nothing wrong with educated guesses, but I won't inflict mine on you! You

in the case of Jewish immigration to Palestine between 1933 and 1939 "Vorzeigegeld" was a.k.a.: "capitalist" immigration certificate of the Mandatory [Palestine] administration:

The major part of the transfer proceeds provided the 1,000 Palestine Pounds (then $4,990) necessary for a "capitalist" immigration certificate of the Mandatory administration, but also for other categories of immigration, such as Youth Aliyah, students, and artisans as well as for the transfer of public funds.
