Oh, I am sure we could find examples for anything out there, including absolutely mutually exclusive things. What really matters, however, is the frequency distribution, i.e. how things are NORMALLY or GENERALLY said under specific circumstances. You are always better off staying with the typical - until one day you are comfortable enough with the target language to know when and where deviating from such cliches may be appropriate. But hey, it's your translation. It's your name on it. Do as you see fit.

Onboarding is a legitimate term, but... ... it is generally used to describe bringing in a new employee. The immediate association is not so much with a bank opening a new account but rather with a new worker bee filling out forms and sitting through company propaganda lectures.

Asker, Apparently those proverbial "cultural differences" are so strong here that we do not even seem to understand a simple construct such as "new account" the same way. Irina is absolutely right: new here means that the account is "new" for the financial institution, i.e. that it did NOT have an account for that client before. Otherwise, it would be "another" account, just as she said.

All of which is to say that you should first and foremost ask yourself who you are translating for and for what purpose. If your intended audience is Western, then you may want to take Irina up on that perfectly sensible suggestion. If, on the other hand, they need it for domestic consumption, by all means translate into RuEN and do some real good servicing:)

Например, 'United States of America' <=> 'Соединенные Штаты Америки', как это принято переводить на русский язык сейчас, каких-то сотню лет тому назад звучало на русском языке как 'Североамериканские Соединенные Штаты (САСШ)' - в отличие от официального наименования государства, расположенного к югу от США/САСШ, которое с самого начала именуется (на русском языке) 'Объединенные Штаты Мексики' ('United States of Mexico').

Кстати, можно отметить, что 'United' <=> 'Соединенные(ое)' на русском языке применяется в переводе исключительно в случае USA или UK, а во всех остальных случаях обычно переводится как "Объединенная/ые" (Республика Танзания, Арабские Эмираты и т. д.). Нет ли в этом какого-либо трудноуловимого лингвистического различия, призванного отразить факт наличия культурного разнообразия?
