What's the meaning of "lesa personalità"?
"L'influenza è una specie di malattia, un crimine di lesa personalità"

Discussion

Asker Because this comes from Gide's Essais critiques, you have to quote that specific passage as it appeared in the English edition, and add a note stating English title, publication year, publisher, translator.
If an English translation of that work exists, that is.
Only if it doesn't, can the quotation be translated freely.

Here's the context It's on page 54, and it's a translation from French.

Context? Without context, the phrase is completely meaningless.

lese personality

It makes me think of "lesa maestà", which is translated as "lese majesty" (or goes untranslated as lèse-majesté). Therefore, "lese personality" is my guess, meaning an offense against personality.

neutral philgoddard : I think it sounds odd to combine French and English in one phrase.

affront to personality

To my mind the privacy of a human being denotes the personal ‘space’ in which the individual is free to be itself, and also the carapace, or shell, or umbrella, or whatever other metaphor is preferred, which protects that space from intrusion. An infringement on privacy is an affront to personality, which is damaged by the violation and by the demonstration that the personal space is not inviolate....

I then came across another article which stated:
....to repair instances of affront to personality, rather than loss of [part of] one's patrimony.

Italian term (edited): crimine di lesa personalità

criminal offenc/se against the person

literally, personal injury or insults / effrontery:

influenza / flu is a variety of disease and (figuratively speaking) a criminal offenc/se against the person: the latter wide enough in UK and Australian terms to include poisoning, recklessly and intentionally spreading sexual or non-sexual disease and short of 'bioterrorism'.

I agree with the lèse-majesté connotations: insulting Royalty, quaere: senior aristocracy.
Example sentence:

The area of law surrounding criminal liability for infecting a person with a disease is complex, given the difficulty of proving causation.

A person can face criminal charges for intentionally or recklessly exposing or spreading infectious diseases, such as COVID or HIV.
