Asker Because this comes from Gide's Essais critiques, you have to quote that specific passage as it appeared in the English edition, and add a note stating English title, publication year, publisher, translator.
If an English translation of that work exists, that is.
Only if it doesn't, can the quotation be translated freely.

lese personality

It makes me think of "lesa maestà", which is translated as "lese majesty" (or goes untranslated as lèse-majesté). Therefore, "lese personality" is my guess, meaning an offense against personality.

To my mind the privacy of a human being denotes the personal ‘space’ in which the individual is free to be itself, and also the carapace, or shell, or umbrella, or whatever other metaphor is preferred, which protects that space from intrusion. literally, personal injury or insults / effrontery:

influenza / flu is a variety of disease and (figuratively speaking) a criminal offenc/se against the person: the latter wide enough in UK and Australian terms to include poisoning, recklessly and intentionally spreading sexual or non-sexual disease and short of 'bioterrorism'.

I agree with the lèse-majesté connotations: insulting Royalty, quaere: senior aristocracy.
