Change log

Mar 8, 2022 23:56: changed "Kudoz queue" from "In queue" to "Public"

Mar 9, 2022 05:27: Karen Zaragoza changed "Vetting" from "Needs Vetting" to "Vet OK"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): sindy cremer

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

@Manfred: Incidentally, Manfred, I forgot to say welcome to Proz.com! I only just noticed that you are new here. Are you a translator too? Or just interested in learning Dutch? In any case, welcome to the site!
Barend van Zadelhoff Mar 9, 2022:
I opted for 'modular' since 'systeem' in 'systeembekisting' sounds 'modular' to me.

E.g., see here an explanation for modular:

MODULAR
The elements of the Geoplast system formwork are modular, designed to fit together in a large number of combinations to fit the exact requirements of each construction site.
The panels are precise in size and shape and fully interchangeable, and share a common fastening method to reduce the overall number of elements needed to create the formwork.

Michael Beijer Mar 9, 2022:
systeembekisting = concept:
– modular formwork (Barend)
– engineered formwork system(s) (Barabara/Wikipedia)
– shuttering system (Dictionary for Building Technology Terminology, TU Delft):

thing:
– form assembly (Dictionary of Building and Civil Engineering)
– ganged form (Dictionary of Building and Civil Engineering)

person:
– formworker

----

I think all the above are correct.
Barend van Zadelhoff Mar 9, 2022:
@Michael Now suppose the term to translate is just:

systeembekisting

This is the problem term and this is the term I suggested a translation for (I did not even notice this 'monteur')

What would you do if the term to translate was just 'systeembekisting'?

This is the question.
Michael Beijer Mar 9, 2022:
@Barend: re your comment "You need the English term for 'systeembekisting'"

Have a look at the job description of a "formworker", e.g. here:
https://www.goconstruct.org/construction-careers/what-jobs-a...

These people work with all kinds of different systems/methods, I don't think it is necessary (or common) for their job title to be so specific, like:

modular formworker
modular formwork builder
engineered formwork system builder
etc.

Just "formworker" will do.
Michael Beijer Mar 9, 2022:
"concrete shutterer" (job description) "What does it take to become a CONCRETE SHUTTERER?

A concrete shutterer’s job description includes fabricating and setting up the forms in which concrete is poured to create walkways, walls, pillars and other structures. Work alongside construction workers by erecting and setting forms for concrete structures, they build wooden moulds and clamp them using appropriate hand tools in fabricating concrete beams, columns and panels. They also introduce rebar or wire mesh to reinforce the material, use trowels and other tools to spread and smooth concrete, and mold expansion joins and edges. They interpret blueprints and read survey stakes with a view to establish appropriate grades, prepare worksites for concrete footings and assemble concrete forms on specified locations." Michael Beijer Mar 9, 2022:

@Michael I don't think so.

You need the English term for 'systeembekisting'

A formwork carpenter constructs conventional formwork.

'systeembekisting' are prefabricated panels that are locked together.
Michael Beijer Mar 9, 2022:
@Barend: Although "engineer" is often used as a fancy way of saying mechanic/electrician/fitter, etc. (e.g., the guy BT sent to fiddle with my Wi-Fi disks is also an "engineer"). In this case you are right. My suggested translation of "monteur systeembekisting" as "formwork design engineer / formwork systems engineer" is wrong.

Incidentally, I suppose:

"monteur systeembekisting" = "betontimmerman"

(= concrete shutterer, shutterer, formwork carpenter, formworker, shuttering carpenter, etc.)

PS: yeah, I looked at the images. indeed, same thing
Barend van Zadelhoff Mar 9, 2022:
@Michael Also have a look at the images from the refs in my answer.
Barend van Zadelhoff Mar 9, 2022:
@Michael I don't think it has something to do with an 'engineer'.

This 'monteur' is the person who the 'bekistingssloten aan elkaar koppelt':

Systeembekisting is bekisting die wordt opgebouwd uit geprefabriceerde herbruikbare elementen. Het frame en de panelen worden met behulp van bekistingssloten aan elkaar gekoppeld. Bekistingsplaten (panelen) worden gemaakt van verschillende materialen. Systeembekisting was een grote innovatie binnen de betonstortmarkt. Voorheen werd bekisting volledig met de hand opgebouwd en bestond uit houten steunbalken en bekistingsplaten.

@Manfred: I think something like this ought to work:

monteur systeembekisting =
formwork design engineer / formwork systems engineer

Wiki

This formwork is built out of prefabricated modules with a metal frame (usually steel or aluminium) and covered on the application (concrete) side with material having the wanted surface structure (steel, aluminum, timber, etc.). The two major advantages of formwork systems, compared to traditional timber formwork, are speed of construction (modular systems pin, clip, or screw together quickly) and lower life-cycle costs (barring major force, the frame is almost indestructible, while the covering if made of wood; may have to be replaced after a few – or a few dozen – uses, but if the covering is made with steel or aluminium the form can achieve up to two thousand uses depending on care and the applications).

Modular Formwork Systems vs Conventional Formwork
For insitu concrete, a modular formwork system provides Commercial, Civil and Industrial contractors with significant savings when compared with conventional methods. Modular Formwork Systems are generally easy to assemble and much faster than conventional Formwork, saving time, allowing you to pour sooner.
