Não sei se isto estará bem escrito, mas se sim, "waffle" terá um significado totalmente diferente do habitual.

Parece-me que aqui Waffle se refere à marca que é deixada pelo ferimento. Porque deve ser de maior extensão e redonda parece-se com uma destas "panquecas"; daí a analogia.
