Text: "Durante el primer encuentro de la Asamblea Nacional de Mujeres Periodistas de la FAPE (Federación de Asociaciones de Periodistas Españoles)...."

My interpretation: National Assembly of Female Journalists from the Federation of Spanish Journalism Associations (FAPE in Spanish)

Is it worth leaving in the acronym even though it has no real relevance in English?

Jessie LN (asker) Dec 15, 2008:
Thank you I may do what bmtraducciones has suggested.

I used "female" because "women journalists" didn't sound quite right to me, but then again, it was only rough and I hadn't done any research.

I absolutely agree with Henry. Imagine if your reader wanted to know more about the organization, and then that person attempted to back translate your rendering of the name. It would probably come out wrong, and the reader would be stuck. I also recommend that you use "women journalists"...

omit the Spanish acronym

This is a new Federation (only 4 Google hits for the acronym with the Spanish name). Although you could say putting it in brackets (FAPE in Spanish) is a nice way to help it get know, there are actually two well-established organisations that have that acronym in English;

FAPE PublicationsA History of the Families and Advocates Partnership for Education Project (FAPE) ... (FAPE-10sm); To taub txog txoj cai taug hauv kev kawm ntawv tshwj xeeb ...
www.fape.org/pubs/index.htm -

Free Appropriate Public Education - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia20 Nov 2008 ... Free Appropriate Public Education, or FAPE, is an educational right of children with disabilities in the United States that is guaranteed by ...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Appropriate_Public_Education_(FAPE).

I don't think it's necessary to indicate the Spanish acronym in this case.
