Discussion

Muriel Vasconcellos Oct 26, 2009:
Agent vs. pathogen Both "contagious agent" and "contagious pathogen" are used in biomedicine (31,900 hits for "contagious agent" vs. 8,100 for "contagious pathogen"). They mean the same thing. I translated/edited several monographs that used the term "contagious agent" relentlessly. These projects had contributions from authors writing in Spanish that required translation plus ones by specialist authors writing in English on the same subject, the best way to confirm terminology.

contagious agent

This would be the translation given your context (none).
Maybe if you wrote the whole sentence we could suggest different terms in different styles.

See you!

I don't think the agent is the same as the contagion, but thanks for agreeing.

infectious agent

This is the term I remember seeing most frequently when I worked as a chemist for a pharmaceutical company.

S. aureus is the infectious agent in the most severe and costly episodes of catheter-related sepsis (1).

Staphylococcus resistance to current antibiotic treatments is accelerating, with MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus) being a leading hospital-acquired infectious agent, causing up to 60% of all staphylococcal infections.

Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) is essential for elimination of Staphylococcus aureus, the main infectious agent responsible for osteomyelitis.
