[...] In 1972, when Kamerling and I founded the Alaska Native Heritage Film Project, our goal was to develop ways in which we, trained media artists, could work with Alaska Natives who had no media training but who wished to document their own culture. We wanted to participate in a new kind of filmmaking where we did not determine the representation of minority people, but at the same time, we did not want to relinquish our aesthetic and technical control or our ethnographic concerns. We believed it was possible to have shared authorship, and - even more idealistically - that the villages we worked with would determine their own representation. Source text - English Excerpt from Terence Turner's essay "Representation, Politics, and Cultural Imagination in Indigenous Video"
[...] Much indigenous video tends to focus on aspects of the life of contemporary indigenous communities that are most directly continuous with the indigenous cultural past. It is often undertaken by indigenous video-makers for the purpose of documenting that past to preserve it for future generations of their own peoples. A mere emphasis on the continuity of indigenous culture or "tradition" however, runs the risk of slipping into uncritical cultural essentialism. It tends to ignore or obscure the extent to which the production of representations is both an individually creative and a socially contested process, involving the conjunction of differing voices, perspectives, and values of different groups and individuals within indigenous communities. The production of social and political reality, as well as the representations through which it is mediated by and to its producers, is a multiprocess in which the participants draw in different ways upon their common cultural stock of ideas, symbols, tropes, and values. In the process, they may alter to varying degrees the form and content of their stock of "representations. Even when indigenous actors employ a reified, homogeneous representation of their own "culture" to present a common ideological front against assimilative pressures from nonindigenous social or political-economic agents, clone examination of the social process of creating and asserting such representations of common "culture" may reveal the complexity and conflict among the structural perspectives, views, and objectives of the actors involved. Ciò viene spesso compiuto dai videomaker indigeni con l’intento di documentare il passato al fine di preservarlo per le future generazioni del loro popolo. Una pura enfasi sulla continuità della cultura o della "tradizione" indigena, comunque, corre il rischio di scivolare in un acritico essenzialismo culturale.
