Overview
We would chose publishers with high levels of branded proprietary content and
low-marginal-cost structures.
Bottom line
Television: Goodbye Distribution Bottleneck, Hello Interactive Experience.
Since the medium’s inception, television companies have come to prominence based on their control of distribution. If people watched only a few channels early on, it is because governments authorized only a few frequencies. When pay-television came, people could once again watch only those channels that the operators wanted to put on their systems. Digital has pushed the capacity constraint (to the NVOD stage), but people still watch what has been put on the menu by some dubious chef.
New technologies that ease distribution constraints (cable modem, ADSL) and enable rich content (software) will usher in the true "a la carte" era, transforming television from a pure passive experience to a truly interactive relationship. Television should be one of the distribution mechanisms for what is now called the Internet. People will be able to shop, bank, book holidays, and do many other things through their set. With its presence in up to 99% of homes, if television can bring the same ease of use and order to the chaotic Web that it provided to plain old viewing, then the medium can take a sizeable share of business-to-consumer e-commerce.
The end of the distribution bottleneck will shift a lot of value to content providers. If U.S. entertainment companies have a significant advantage in this category owing to their products’ global appeal, local content will also be of major importance.
Companies that invest significantly in proprietary content now consequently are in favor. The end of passivity will reward companies that can offer the best interactive experience, irrespective of technology (witness Betamax and V2000 versus VHS, the most inferior technology). With that in mind, Canal+, Flextech, and TF1 seem to be the companies presenting the best chances to capitalize on these trends among our universe.
Publishing: Familiarity Breeds Content The Internet will increasingly dominate the future of publishing. Collection, collation, and distribution of content via the Internet will seemingly result in cannibalization of traditional revenue streams, only to be outweighed by the increase of efficiency and opportunity. Web distribution will enable publishers to take standardized products and customize them to the individual needs of users. Product ranges will also broaden to include workflow software, electronic storage and a raft of e-commerce offerings.
