Πρόλογος
Ερχόμαστε από μια σκοτεινή άβυσσο· καταλήγουμε σε μια σκοτεινή άβυσσο· το μεταξύ φωτεινό διάστημα το λέμε Ζωή.
Ευτύς ως γεννηθούμε, αρχίζει κι η επιστροφή· ταυτόχρονα το ξεκίνημα κι ο γυρισμός· κάθε στιγμή πεθαίνουμε. Γι αυτό πολλοί διαλάλησαν: Σκοπός της ζωής είναι ο θάνατος.
Μα κι ευτύς ως γεννηθούμε, αρχίζει κι η προσπάθεια να δημιουργήσουμε, να συνθέσουμε, να κάμουμε την ύλη ζωή· κάθε στιγμή γεννιούμαστε. Γι΄ αυτό πολλοί διαλάλησαν: Σκοπός της εφήμερης ζωής είναι η αθανασία.
Στα πρόσκαιρα ζωντανά σώματα τα δυο τούτα ρέματα παλεύουν:
α) ο ανήφορος, προς τη σύνθεση, προς τη ζωή, προς την αθανασία·
β) ο κατήφορος, προς την αποσύνθεση, προς την ύλη, προς το θάνατο.
Και τα δυο ρέματα πηγάζουν από τα έγκατα της αρχέγονης ουσίας. Στην αρχή η ζωή ξαφνιάζει· σαν παράνομη φαίνεται, σαν παρά φύση, σαν εφήμερη αντίδραση στις σκοτεινές αιώνιες πηγές· μα βαθύτερα νιώθουμε: η Ζωή είναι κι αυτή άναρχη, ακατάλυτη φόρα του Σύμπαντου.
Αλλιώς, πούθε η περανθρώπινη δύναμη που μας σφεντονίζει από το αγέννητο στο γεννητό και μας γκαρδιώνει· φυτά, ζώα, ανθρώπους· στον αγώνα; Και τα δυο αντίδρομα ρέματα είναι άγια.
Χρέος μας λοιπόν να συλλάβουμε τ΄ όραμα που χωράει κι εναρμονίζει τις δυο τεράστιες τούτες άναρχες, ακατάλυτες Ορμές· και με τ΄ όραμα τούτο να ρυθμίσουμε το στοχασμό μας και την πράξη.

Prologue
From a dark abyss we hail, to a dark abyss we end up; the intervening span of light we call Life.
We are hardly born yet and the return has begun; embarking and coming back are simultaneous; we die every moment. This is why many have cried from the rooftops: Death is the purpose of living.
Yet, it's also true that we are hardly born yet and the effort has begun to create, to compose, to make life out of matter; we are born every moment. This is why many have cried from the rooftops: It's immortality that is the purpose of living so - as if we lived but for a single day.
In our ephemeral living bodies, two currents fight it over:
a) uphill rising, the one ascends toward composition, life, immortality;
b) downhill sloping, the other descends toward decomposition, materiality, death.
Both currents spring from the depths of primordial Being. In the beginning, we are taken aback by life; it strikes us as something illegitimate, as something against nature, as a short-lived reaction against the dark eternal fountainheads. Yet, deeper inside we sense what is happening: Life itself is an indestructible, eternal rush that issues forth from the Whole.
If it weren't so, from where would the superhuman strength issue, that catapults us from the unborn unto the born and fortifies us so -- plants, animals, human beings - in the struggle? Holy are both crisscrossing currents.
So, it is our duty to grasp the vision that can hold and channel together these two vast, eternal, indestructible Drives; and it is our duty, guided by this vision, to arrange our thoughts and our deeds so that they are in tune with the rhythm of the Whole.
