Source text - English September 15, 2006: Over half (55%) of people living with lymphoma had never heard of this
cancer before they were diagnosed, and almost half (43%) of patients did not understand, or only
partially understood what they were told by their doctors upon diagnosis, according to a new
global survey carried out to mark World Lymphoma Awareness Day (WLAD) on September 15th
2006.
The survey of 504 lymphoma patients, their families and friends, was carried out by the
Lymphoma Coalition, a non-profit network of international lymphoma patient groups, to examine
patients’ fears about the cancer and the support they receive at diagnosis, and to also gather
information about public awareness of lymphoma.
When asked about their biggest worry when diagnosed, 42% of those questioned said that it was
whether the lymphoma could be treated, while 42% said their greatest fear was their uncertain
future with this disease. One third (33%) of patients interviewed said that improved public
awareness was necessary to help other people with this form of cancer.
Lymphoma is a cancer of the blood that kills nearly 200,000 people every year, yet it remains one
of the most poorly understood forms of cancer. Around the world, there are one million people
living with lymphoma and the incidence of the most common type, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, has
increased by 80% since the early 1970s. The exact cause of lymphoma is unclear but it can
affect men, women and children of all ages and nationalities, regardless of lifestyle.
Dr Laurie Sehn, Medical Oncologist and Clinical Researcher, British Columbia Cancer Agency,
Vancouver, BC, Canada, stated, “These survey findings highlight the extreme lack of awareness
and understanding of this form of cancer. Many people have not heard of lymphoma or even the
lymphatic system despite the vital role it plays in the body”. She continued, “The symptoms of
lymphoma can be very similar to those of other less serious conditions like the flu, and therefore it
is vital that anyone who is concerned about prolonged symptoms such as swelling in the neck,
underarm region or groin, weight loss and tiredness speaks to their doctor.”

La Lymphoma Coalition, un’organizzazione no profit che collega a livello internazionale diversi gruppi di pazienti
affetti da linfoma, ha intervistato 504 pazienti affetti dalla patologia, le loro famiglie e i loro amici al fine di
verificare quali siano i timori dei pazienti in relazione al cancro e il grado di supporto ricevuto al momento della
diagnosi, nonché di raccogliere dati relativi al grado di sensibilizzazione del pubblico in merito al linfoma.
Alla domanda su quale fosse stata la principale preoccupazione dopo aver conosciuto la diagnosi, il 42% degli
intervistati ha risposto indicando l’incertezza sulle possibilità di cura del linfoma, mentre per il 42% il timore più
grande è legato al senso di incertezza sul proprio futuro. Un terzo dei pazienti intervistati (33%) è convinto che,
per poter aiutare le persone colpite da questa forma di cancro, sarebbe necessaria una maggior
sensibilizzazione del pubblico.
Il linfoma è un cancro del sangue che provoca la morte di circa 200.000 persone ogni anno, pur rimanendo una
delle forme meno conosciute. Nel mondo sono oltre un milione le persone affette da linfoma e l’incidenza della
forma più diffusa, il linfoma non-Hodgkin, è aumentata dell’80% dagli inizi degli anni 1970. La causa del linfoma
è tuttora sconosciuta; inoltre, esso colpisce indifferentemente uomini, donne e bambini, di ogni età e gruppo
etnico, a prescindere dallo stile di vita.
La dott.ssa Laurie Sehn, oncologa e ricercatrice clinica presso la British Columbia Cancer Agency di Vancouver,
BC, Canada, ha affermato: “I risultati di questa indagine hanno evidenziato quanto questa forma di cancro sia
poco conosciuta e studiata. Molte persone non conoscono il linfoma, né il sistema linfatico, nonostante esso
