Janaki i Milton Manaki – fotografowie
i filmowcy, pionierzy kinematografii na Bałkanach. Bracia Manaki pochodzą
z terenów pogranicza dzisiejszej Macedonii i Grecji. Pod koniec XIX wieku bracia otworzyli studio fotograficzne. Duże zainteresowanie ich usługami pozwoliło obydwu fotografom rozwijać działalność. Obok zdjęć w ramach wykonywanych usług bracia prowadzili szeroką działalność dokumentalną, fotografując scenki z życia codziennego i kultury ludowej. W 1904 roku bracia przenieśli się do Bitoli, macedońskiego miasta, z którym są kojarzeni do dziś. W 1905 roku dzięki wsparciu króla Rumunii, Karola I Janaki Manaki wyruszył do Londynu, gdzie zakupił kamerę filmową. Po powrocie do Bitoli wraz z bratem dokonał pierwszego nagrania – sfilmowali swoją 114-letnią babkę podczas przędzenia wełny. Od tego filmu datuje się narodziny bałkańskiej kinematografii.
Bracia Manaki pozostawili po sobie ogromny zbiór fotografii dokumentujących kulturę
i tradycję ludności bałkańskiej. Janaki i Milton stali się również patronami organizowanego od 1950 roku w Bitoli Międzynarodowego Festiwalu Filmowego „Manaki Brothers”.

Janaki and Milton Manaki – photographers and film making pioneers of the Balkans. Manaki brothers were born in the border area of the present day Macedonia and Greece. By the end of the 19th century the brothers established a photographic studio and their services quickly gained popularity. This allowed them to broaden their activity and soon, apart from portrait pictures that they produced daily, they began to document their surroundings by photographing the local culture and everyday life of the region. In 1904, Manaki brothers decided to move to Bitoli, a Macedonian city that their names are connected to until this day and in 1905, thanks to the support of the King of Romania, Charles I, Janaki Manaki set off on a journey to London where he purchased a film camera. After the return to Bitoly, Janaki with his brother made their first recording in which they captured their 114-old grandmother spinning wool, and thus landmarked the beginning of Balkan cinema.
Manaki brothers left behind an impressive collection of photographs, documenting the tradition and culture of Balkan folk. “Manaki Brothers” – the International Film Festival of Bitoli that has been organised since 1950, was named in their honour.
