Source text - English Eurogroup for animals is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this year. It was set up in 1980 to work towards the introduction, implementation and enforcement of European laws that will improve animal welfare and reduce animal suffering. It represents the leading welfare organizations in the European Union (EU) which, in turn, represent the views of millions of EU citizens who care about animals. By communicating the views of citizens and consumers to the European institutions, Eurogroup provides a channel for and helps the EU to respond to the concerns of civil society.
Animals are recognized in the Lisbon Treaty in Article 13 as "sentient beings" whose welfare must be taken into account when the EU is developing policy and legislation in certain key areas. However, for many people, animals are still mere products to be used, traded, bought, transported and discarded or slaughtered without compassion.
Many animals in modern "intensive" farming systems are kept in very poor conditions where they have little space and no chance to express their natural behavior. But farmers are also struggling to make a living, and higher standards for animal welfare represent an opportunity to increase their income as consumers are willing to pay more money for these products. According to a 2007 Eurobarometer survey, 62 % of respondents said they would change their shopping habits in order to access more animal welfare friendly goods, and 57 % would be willing to pay more for hen's eggs sourced from an animal welfare friendly production system. It is difficult for European farmers to compete on price, but marketing their products as adhering to better animal welfare standards can give them a competitive edge.
Ensuring good farm animal welfare and supporting economic activities in rural areas go hand in hand. Husbandry systems with higher welfare standards generally lead to an increased need for manpower. Higher quality products generally mean higher cost of production but also a higher price on the market, and contribute to improve the competitiveness of producers.

Тя е била основана през 1980 г, за да работи за въвеждането, прилагането и влизането в сила на европейското законодателство за подобряване на благосъстоянието на животните и намаляването на тяхното страдание при клане. Еврогрупата е представител на водещите организации в посочената област в рамките на Европейския съюз (ЕС), които от своя страна представляват вижданията на милиони граждани на Общността, загрижени за благосъстоянието на животните. Чрез представянето на възгледите на европейските граждани и потребители пред институциите на ЕС, Еврогрупата създава канал за връзка и информираност на тези институции по проблемите, които вълнуват гражданското общество.
По смисъла на чл.13 от Лисабонския договор, животните биват разглеждани като „съзнателни същества”, чието благосъстояние следва да се взема предвид при изработването на европейската политика и законодателство в определени ключови сектори. Въпреки това за много хора животните са просто продукти, подлежащи на употреба, покупко-продажба, транспортиране, изоставяне или клане, без проява на каквото и да било състрадание.
Много животни в модерното „интензивно” селско стопанство се отглеждат при доста лоши условия, в недостатъчно пространство и без никаква възможност да изразяват естественото си поведение. Но фермерите, от своя страна, се борят за прехраната си, а по-високите стандарти за благосъстояние на животните са възможност за повишаване на техните доходи, тъй като потребителите са склонни да плащат повече пари за произведените от тях продукти. По данни от проведено през 2007 г. обществено проучване на Евробарометър, 62 % от запитаните са отговорили, че биха променили своите навици за пазаруване, за да получат достъп до стоки с по-добри показатели по отношение на благосъстоянието на животните. Повече от половината (57%) от същите участници в допитването биха били склонни да платят повече за кокоши яйца, произведени в условия, осигуряващи по-добро благосъстояние на животните. За фермерите в ЕС е трудно да се състезават за спечелване на повече потребители само въз основа на цената и затова рекламирането на техните стоки като произведени в съответствие със стандартите за благосъстояние на животните, може да повиши тяхната конкурентноспособност.
Осигуряването на добри жизнени условия за животните във фермите е непосредствено обвързано с подкрепата за икономическата дейност в селските райони. Системите за отглеждане по по-високи стандарти за благосъстояние в повечето случаи водят по нарастване на търсенето на работна сила. Производството на продукти с по-високо качество често е свързано с по-високи разходи, но също и с по-висока пазарна цена. То допринася за подобряването на конкурентноспособността на производителите.
