One such strategy that has seen success is maternal immunization, or pregnancy vaccines. At present, maternal immunization is a proven clinical strategy to prevent infections in infants within the first week of life. The CDC ( Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, US) has since recommended the combined prenatal vaccines in DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. This is however only the beginning.
Soon there will be a greater variety of maternal vaccines available to enhance transference of the mother’s protective antibodies during the gestational period. This will provide a profound impact on increasing newborn survival rates worldwide. Many global pharmaceutical companies are investing in developments of maternal immunizations against various contagious diseases through early phases in clinical trials.
* In June of this year, Pfizer began phase trial I/II in maternal vaccines for Group B Streptococcus (GBS). GBS manifests as sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis in newborns and lead to potential fatal results or serious neurological damage. If the vaccine is proven successful than GBS infections can be prevented in 95 percent of newborns through maternal immunization.
* Novavax is currently enrolling patients for a phase III development trials in maternal immunization against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). RSV is the cause of an approximate 160,000 deaths per year worldwide.
* VBI Vaccines is developing maternal vaccines to protect against the infection of Cytomegalovirus (CMV), which is the cause of fetal malformation and postnatal neurological abnormalities, particularly sensorineural hearing loss.
VBI expects to evaluate safety and tolerance to the human body and its immunological validity through phase I trials.
