세계보건기구는 건강한 노화를 '나이가 들어가면서 건강한 생활을 가능하게 하는 기능적 능력을 개발하고 유지하는 과정'이라고 2015년 정의했다. 노화는 다양한 생리학적 변화를 동반하고, 근육량의 감소는 노화의 가장 현저한 특징 중 하나이다. 근육감소증(Sarcopenia)의 특징인 부속지 근육량의 감소는 일상 활동을 수행하는 신체 기운과 능력의 저하로 증가된 지방량으로 인한 사망의 원인이 될 수 있다.

Ageing is accompanied by various physiological changes and muscle mass decline is one of the most prominent features of ageing [3]. The decreasing in appendicular muscle mass, which is the characteristic of Sarcopenia [4], can be the cause of death [5] of increased fat mass in a reduction of physical strength and ability to perform activities of daily living [6].
