I WAS SUMMONED TO THE KING. I REMEMBER HATING THIS, the long walk up the endless throne room. At the front, I knelt on stone. Some kings chose to have rugs there for the knees of messengers who had long news to tell. My father preferred not to.
“King Tyndareus’ daughter is finally ready for marriage,” he said.
I knew the name. Tyndareus was king of Sparta and held huge tracts of the ripest southern lands, the kind my father coveted. I had heard of his daughter too, rumored to be the fairest woman in our countries. Her mother, Leda, was said to have been ravished by Zeus, the king of the gods himself, disguised as a swan. Nine months later, her womb yielded two sets of twins: Clytemnestra and Castor, children of her mortal husband; Helen and Polydeuces, the shining cygnets of the god. But gods were known to be notoriously poor parents; it was expected that Tyndareus would offer patrimony to all.
I did not respond to my father’s news. Such things meant nothing to me.
My father cleared his throat, loud in the silent chamber. “We would do well to have her in our family. You will go and put yourself forth as a suitor.” There was no one else in the hall, so my startled huff of breath was for his ears alone. But I knew better than to speak my discomfort. My father already knew all that I might say: that I was nine, unsightly, unpromising, uninterested.
We left the next morning, our packs heavy with gifts and food for the journey. Soldiers escorted us, in their finest armor. I don’t remember much of the trip—it was overland, through countryside that left no impression. At the head of the column, my father dictated new orders to secretaries and messengers who rode off in every direction.

МЕНЕ ВИКЛИКАЛИ ДО ЦАРЯ. Я НЕНАВИДІВ цей довгий шлях нескінченною залою. Перед його троном я приклонив коліно, врізаючись плоттю об кам’яну підлогу. Деякі з королів стелять килими для посланців, чиї новини вимагали довгої переповіді. Та не мій батько.
“Дочка царя Тиндарея нарешті готова до заміжжя” — мовив він.
Це ім’я я чув не вперше. Тиндарей був царемм Спарти і володів величезними угіддями найпридатніших піведенних земель. І мій батько зухвало жадав його статків. Я чув і про Тиндареєву доньку, благороднішу серед дівчат цих країв, якщо вірити чуткам. Її мати Леду знечестив Зевс, головний з богів, перекинувшись на лебедя. Через дев’ять місяців з утроби Леди постало дві пари близнюків: Клітеместра та Кастор — діти її смертного чоловіка, та Єлена і Полідевк — божі лебедики.
Та боги неспроста були знані нікчемними батьками. Тож не дивно, що Тиндарей поділить свою спадщину між всіма дітьми.
Я не став давати відповіді на новини. Зрештою, такі речі мене не цікавили.
Мій батько прокашлявся, показово, у густій тиші. “В нашій сім’ї ця дівчина була б дуже доречна. Ти мусиш здатись їй хорошим нареченим”. В той момент єдині ми були в залі, тож лише батькові судилось чути мої просякнуті гнівом подихи. Та мені стало розуму не сперечатись. Батько без того знав все, що я міг йому заявити: мені всього дев’ять, я непривабливий, безперспективний та не зацікавлений.
Ми почали нашу путь наступного ранку, обтяжені дарунками та харчами в дорогу. Солдати супроводжували нас, вбрані у найкращу броню. Я мало пам’ятаю із подорожі — вона пролягала понурими селищами, що не залишали яскравих вражень. Мій батько на чолі колони диктував нові накази секретарям і посланцям, які роз'їжджалися в усіх напрямках

It is common opinion that Das Kapital has played old harry with capitalism, so that Marxists can hardly recognise it when they see it, and the widespread diffusion of Freud’s ideas has wrought such havoc with clinical psychology that any intelligent patient can make a nervous wreck of his analyst. What has been the influence of contemporary architectural historians on the history of contemporary architecture?
They have created the idea of a Modern Movement – this was known even before Basil Taylor took up arms against false historicism – and beyond that they have offered a rough classification of the ‘isms’ which are the thumb-print of Modernity into two main types: One, like Cubism, is a label, a recognition tag, applied by critics and historians to a body of work which appears to have certain consistent principles running through it, whatever the relationship of the artists; the other, like Futurism, is a banner, a slogan, a policy consciously adopted by a group of artists, whatever the apparent similarity or dissimilarity of their products. And it is entirely characteristic of the New Brutalism – our first native art-movement since the New Art-History arrived here-that it should confound these categories and belong to both at once.

Здебільше використовується для опису підходів до вивчення історії мистецтв як інлетеклуальної дисципліни, що розвинулись після Другої світової війни. Виник як реакція на попередню, переважно літературну традицію мистецтвознавства , що ґрунтувалась на засадах Ренесансу, що вважалась застарілою та неадаптивною до нового часу.
