English to Swedish: Example from the exhibition "Who's voice - which music" at the Music Museum in Stockholm Detailed field: Music
Source text - English Harpa

Men intresset bland pojkar ökade
promenerar i stadsparken.
Translation - Swedish Harp
In Europe during the 1800’s, the noble woman was often considered to be a pretty decoration to her instrument.
Certain instruments had to be avoided by women.
A cello between female legs was considered sexually provocative.
The harp, however, enhanced her beauty and grace.
There are only a few men playing the harp in European symphony orchestras today.
Women dominate almost completely.
Electric guitar
Increasing potency? Sex attribute?
With electric guitars and rock music, a whole new youth culture was born.
Roaring and howling signals the masculinity and the power of the guitar.
Maximum sound level, spectacular effects – macho!
Hard rock is still a male world, both on stage and among the audience.
Even though there are several female rock guitarists today.
Drum
The drum has had a magical associations and practical function since time immemorial.
From African drums to the gigantic drum kit of rock bands.
Frenzied rhythms and powerful sound.
The drum can warn against dangers and scare wild animals.
It can generate respect and allow soldiers to keep in rhythm in the march towards the enemy.
It is not surprising that it became an important tool for the armies of the world.
Guitar
The revivalist movement came to Sweden at the end of the 1800’s.
Singing and music were important tools in the process of salvation.
Women sang and played the “Jesus-plucker” to save our lost souls.
It became almost embarrassing for a man to play guitar
- an instrument that belonged to female music.
Not something a proper man should get involved with.
”… Violin, clarinet, flute and accordion were suitable instruments –
but not to ”sit and pluck on a guitar”.
Värmland
”A man should not play and sing. The only instrument he should use was the violin.
To play guitar was un-masculine and unsuitable. A man should play tunes but not songs…”
Lappland
When European artists during the 1600s portrayed life in the brothels, they often placed a lute in the hands of half-naked women.
Was it perhaps the rounded shape of the lute that made it into an erotically charged symbol for womens’ hidden sexuality?
The lute of the Swedish ballad, however, is completely in masculine hands.
It has been this way since the turn of the previous century and until today.
Will ballad-singing forever belong to macho-men?
Where are all the lute-playing women?
Piano
A piano in the living room showed a home consistent with one's position in society
In the middle-class family it was considered good upbringing if both wife and daughter could entertain at the piano.
The female piano teachers of the 1900’s did their best to preserve the tradition.
The majority of students were girls. But the interest grew among boys when synthesizers and other electrical pianos became more common.
A little gender story
– about the elegant stick-violin and the practical sewing-table piano.
It is an evening in spring in the late 1800s. A gathering of well-dressed gentlemen are strolling through the city park. They enjoy the beautiful weather and converse about things that men of this time take an interest in.
One of the more fashionable men suddenly stops. With a simple operation he turns his walking stick into a violin and plays an appropriate nocturne for his friends.
At the same time, in the quiet home corner, sits his wife by the sewing-table.
The children have just gone to sleep and the domestic servant has got the evening off.
When the needlework becomes too boring she takes a break, lifts the lid up and plays an easy tune on the sewing-table piano.
