Colloquially known as the Bangkok Bank Triangle, this was until recently a major bus stop connecting commuters from the suburbs to the city centre.
The Bangkok Bank was located here from 1959 till it recently moved to more modern premises.
Historically this area intersected many streets - High Street, Petaling Street, Yap Ah Loy Street, Market Street - which was why its original name was roughly translated as ‘Five Lamp-post Intersection’.
As the town expanded during the early 1900s, certain streets were widened to accommodate traffic and a small plot of land was created at the crossroads.
There was a dispute over this between the estate of Yap Ah Loy* and the government with both laying claim to it.
This small oasis of greenery was subsequently a public park popular with romancing and marriage proposals, then a very unromantic car park and presently a pedestrianised area showcasing the history of Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown.
*Yap Ah Loy was a Kapitan Cina, or leader of the Chinese community.

Bio
An accountant by training but a translator by choice, I switched from crunching numbers to toying with words out of sheer love for the art of word play. Having spoken English since I was 5, English is second nature to me as is Malay my mother tongue. Later, at the age of 17 I was sent under scholarship by the government of Malaysia to Sydney Australia to complete my year 12 in Sydney Girls' High School and later pursued my tertiary education. I later proceeded to the UK to study Accounting at Thames Valley University London (Ealing College).
Returning to Malaysia I became an Internal Auditor and later Project Accountant and Financial Controller in construction related companies. After approximately 15 years I finally decided to use my knowledge in these areas of expertise, as well as others I have picked up over the years in my Translation practice.
