We raise our girls to fight stereotypes and pursue their dreams, but we don’t do the same for our boys.

We’re now more likely to tell our daughters they can be anything they want to be — an astronaut and a mother, a tomboy and a girlie girl. But we don’t do the same for our sons.
Even as we’ve given girls more choices for the roles they play, boys’ worlds are still confined, social scientists say. They’re discouraged from having interests that are considered feminine. They’re told to be tough at all costs, or else to tamp down their so-called boy energy.
If we want to create an equitable society, one in which everyone can thrive, we need to also give boys more choices. As Gloria Steinem says, “I’m glad we’ve begun to raise our daughters more like our sons, but it will never work until we raise our sons more like our daughters.”
That’s because women’s roles can’t expand if men’s don’t, too. But it’s not just about women. Men are falling behind in school and work because we are not raising boys to succeed in the new, pink economy. Skills like cooperation, empathy and diligence — often considered to be feminine — are increasingly valued in modern-day work and school, and jobs that require these skills are the fastest-growing.
In her new book, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the Nigerian-born author, gives instructions for raising a feminist daughter. But how can we raise feminist sons?
I asked neuroscientists, economists, psychologists and others to answer that question, based on the latest research and data we have about gender. I defined feminist simply, as someone who believes in the full equality of men and women. Their advice applied broadly: to anyone who wants to raise children who are kind, confident and free to pursue their dreams.
Let him cry
Boys and girls cry the same amount when they’re babies and toddlers, research shows. It’s around age 5 that boys get the message that anger is acceptable but that they’re not supposed to show other feelings, like vulnerability, said Tony Porter, co-founder of A Call to Men, an education and advocacy group.
“Our daughters are allowed to be human beings, and our sons are taught to be robotic,” he said. “Teach him that he has a full range of emotions, to stop and say, ‘I’m not angry; I’m scared, or my feelings are hurt, or I need help.’”
Give him role models
Boys are particularly responsive to spending time with role models, even more than girls, research shows. There is growing evidence that boys raised in households without a father figure fare worse in behavior, academics and earnings. One reason, according to the economists David Autor and Melanie Wasserman, is they do not see men taking on life’s responsibilities. “Put good men in the space of your son,” Mr. Porter said.
Give them strong female role models, too. Talk about the achievements of women you know, and well-known women in sports, politics or media. Sons of single mothers usually have a lot of respect for their accomplishments, said Tim King, founder of Urban Prep Academies for low-income, African-American boys. He encourages them to see other women that way.
Let him be himself
Even as adult gender roles have merged, children’s products have become more divided by gender than they were 50 years ago, research has found: pink princesses and blue trucks, not just in the toy aisle but on cups and toothbrushes. It’s no wonder that children’s interests end up aligning that way.
But neuroscientists say children aren’t born with those preferences. Until the mid-20th century, pink was the boy color and blue was for girls. In studies, infants have not been shown to have strong toy preferences. The difference, according to researchers, emerges at the same time that children become aware of their gender, around age 2 or 3, at which point societal expectations can override innate interests. Yet longitudinal studies suggest that toy segregation has long-term effects on gender gaps in academics, spatial skills and social skills, according to Campbell Leaper, chairman of the psychology department at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
For children to reach their full potential, they need to follow their interests, traditional or not. So let them. The idea is not to assume that all children want to do the same things, but to make sure they’re not limited.
Offer open-ended activities, like playing with blocks or clay, and encourage boys to try activities like dress-up or art class, even if they don’t seek them out, social scientists say. Call out stereotypes. (“It’s too bad that toy box shows all girls because I know boys also like to play with dollhouses.”) It could also improve the status of women. Researchers say the reason parents encourage daughters to play soccer. or become doctors, but not sons to take ballet or become nurses, is that “feminine” equals lower status.
Teach him to take care of himself
“Some mothers raise their daughters but love their sons,” said Jawanza Kunjufu, an author and lecturer on educating black boys. They make their daughters study, do chores and go to church, he said — but not their sons.
The difference shows up in the data: American girls ages 10 to 17 spend two more hours on chores each week than boys do, and boys are 15 percent more likely to be paid for doing chores, according to a University of Michigan study.
“Teach our sons to cook, clean and look after themselves — to be equally competent in the home as we would expect our daughters to be in the office,” said Anne-Marie Slaughter, chief executive of New America, a think tank.
Teach him to take care of others
Women still do more of the caregiving — for children and for older people — and the housework, even when both parents work full time, data show. And caregiving jobs are the fastest-growing. So teach boys to care for others.
Talk about how men balance work and family, and how sons and not just daughters are expected to care for parents and relatives when they’re old, Ms. Slaughter said. Enlist boys’ help making soup for a sick friend or visiting a relative in the hospital. Give them responsibilities caring for pets and younger siblings. Encourage them to babysit, coach or tutor. One program brings babies into elementary classrooms, which has been found to increase empathy and decrease aggression.
Share the work
When possible, resist gender roles in housework and child care among parents. Actions speak louder than words, said Dan Clawson, a sociologist at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst: “If the mother cooks the food and cleans the house and the father mows the lawn and is often gone from home, lessons are learned.”
Also share some of the breadwinning. Men raised by mothers who worked for at least a year around the time their sons were teenagers were more likely to marry women who work, one study showed. Another found that sons of women who work for any amount of time before age 14 spend more time on housework and child care as adults. “Men who were raised by employed moms are significantly more egalitarian in their gender attitudes,” said Kathleen McGinn, a professor at Harvard Business School.
Encourage friendships with girls
Research at Arizona State University found that by the end of preschool, children start segregating by sex, and this reinforces gender stereotypes. But children who are encouraged to play with friends of the opposite sex learn better problem-solving and communication.
“The more obvious it is that gender is being used to categorize groups or activities, the more likely it is that gender stereotypes and bias are reinforced,” said Richard Fabes, director of the university’s Sanford School, which studies gender and education.
Organize coed birthday parties and sports teams for young children, so children don’t come to believe it’s acceptable to exclude a group on the basis of sex, said Christia Brown, a developmental psychologist at the University of Kentucky. Try not to differentiate in language, either: One study found that when preschool teachers said “boys and girls” instead of “children,” the students held more stereotypical beliefs about men’s and women’s roles and spent less time playing with one another.
Boys who have friendships with girls are also less likely to think of women as sexual conquests, Mr. Porter said.
Teach ‘no means no’
Other ways to teach respect and consent: Require children to ask before they touch one another’s bodies as early as preschool. Also, teach them the power of the word no — stop tickling them or wrestling with them when they say it.
Model healthy problem-solving at home. Children’s exposure to divorce or abuse has been linked to poor conflict resolution in future romantic relationships, said W. Bradford Wilcox, a sociologist and director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia
Speak up when others are intolerant
Say something when you see teasing or harassment, and role-play with boys so they can intervene when they see it, Ms. Brown said.
Speak up when they’re inappropriate, too. “Boys will be boys” is not an excuse for bad behavior. Expect more of them. “Be vigilant in redirecting conduct which is demeaning, intolerant, disrespectful, offensive,” Mr. King said.
Never use ‘girl’ as an insult
Don’t say — and don’t let your son say — that someone throws or runs like a girl, or use “sissy” or any of its more offensive synonyms. Same for sexist jokes.
Be careful with subtler language, too. The research of Emily Kane, a sociologist at Bates College, shows that parents enforce traditional gender roles for sons mostly because they fear those sons will be teased. “We can all help by avoiding judgment, and avoiding small, everyday assumptions about what a kid will enjoy or be good at based on their gender,” she said. Boys who get teased could say, “No, anyone can play with beads,” or “I am not a girl, but do you think they’re worse than boys?” said Lise Eliot, a neuroscientist at Rosalind Franklin University.
Read a lot, including about girls and women
You’ve probably heard that boys excel at science and math, and girls at language and reading. Stereotypes can become self-fulfilling. Mothers talk more with daughters than sons, according to a meta-analysis by Mr. Leaper. Fight the stereotype by talking to boys, reading to them and encouraging them to read.
Read about a wide variety of people, and stories that break the mold, not just those about boys saving the world and girls needing to be saved. When a book or a news item fits that mold, talk about it: Why does the mother in the “Berenstain Bears” always wear a housecoat and rarely leave the house? Why does a news photograph show all white men?
“That should start at 3, when they really pick up stereotypes and notice them,” Ms. Brown said. “If you don’t help them label them as stereotypes, they assume this is the way it is.”
Celebrate boyhood
Raising a son this way isn’t just about telling boys what not to do, or about erasing gender differences altogether. For instance, all male mammals engage in rough-and-tumble play, Ms. Eliot said.
So roughhouse, crack jokes, watch sports, climb trees, build campfires. Teach boys to show strength — the strength to acknowledge their emotions. Teach them to provide for their families — by caring for them. Show them how to be tough — tough enough to stand up to intolerance. Give them confidence — to pursue whatever they’re passionate about.

نستطيع الآن أن نربي بناتنا على إمكانية تحقيق ذواتهن كما يردن وأن يكنّ على الصورة التي يشأنها ,كأن تكون المرأة رائدةُ فضاء , أم ، ذات مظهر مسترجل أو دلوع, ولكننا لانفعل هذا مع صبياننا الذكور.
يقول علماء الاجتماع بأننا عندما منحنا الفتيات حرية أكبر في اختيار الأدوار التي يرغبن القيام بها ,لاحظنا بأن الخيارات في عالم الأولاد الذكور لاتزال محدودة، ولا يجري تشجيع الصبيان على الاهتمام بما هو نسويّ بل نطلب منهم أن يكونوا قساةً متماسكين مهما يكن الأمر كي لا تُنتقص رجولتهم .
لكن إذا أردنا أن ننشئ مجتمعاً منصِفاً تزدهر فيه حياةُ كل فرد, علينا أن نمنح خياراتٍ أكثر للصبيان. تقول غلوريا شتاينم "أشعر بالسعادة لأننا بدأنا نربي بناتنا كما نربي أولادنا الذكور, لكن الأمر سيبقى دون جدوى فعلية إلى أن نربي الصبيان كما نربي البنات, وذلك لأن أدوار المرأة لا يمكن أن تتوسع بشكل أساسي إذا لم تتوسع أدوار الرجل أيضاً ,و هذا الأمر لا يتعلق فقط بالإناث إذ نجد بأن الأولاد يتخلفون عن الركب في المدرسة أوالعمل لأننا لم ندربهم على إثبات الذات في الاقتصاد الجديد -الذي يسمى الاقتصاد الوردي- و يعتمد بالدرجة الأولى على مهارات التعاون والتعاطف والدأب وهي مهاراتٌ كثيراً ما اعتبرناها مهاراتٍ أنثوية , مع الانتباه إلى أن هذه المهارات صارت مطلوبة على نحو متزايد في الأعمال الراهنة أو في التحصيل الدراسي، علماً بأن الوظائف التي تتطلب مثل هذه المهارات هي الأسرع نموا وتزايداً.
في كتابها الجديد, تقدّم تشيماماندا نغوزي أديشي، الكاتبة المولودة في نيجيريا ,تعليمات لتربية الفتاة على المفاهيم النسوية , لكن السؤال يبقى كيف يمكننا تربية أبناءنا الذكور على المفاهيم النسوية أيضاً؟
سألت علماء أعصاب واقتصاديين وعلماء نفس وغيرهم للرد على هذا السؤال، استنادا إلى أحدث البحوث والبيانات التي لدينا حول الجندرية وتطبيق ذلك على الذكر والأنثى. قدمت تعريفاً بسيطاً للنسوية بوصفي شخصٌ يؤمن بالمساواة الكاملة بين الرجال والنساء ,فجاءت نصيحتهم رحبةً وتنطبق بِحُريةٍ على أي شخص يريد أن يربي أطفاله ليكونوا طيبين وواثقين بأنفسهم وأحرار في تحقيق أحلامهم.
دعوه يبكي
يبكي الذكور والإناث بنفس القدر وهم رضّعاً أو أطفالاً صغاراً جداً كما تبين البحوث. يقول توني بورتر، المؤسس المشارك ل "نداء إلى الرجال"، وهي مجموعة تثقيفية تناصر هذه القضية," في سن الخامسة تقريبا، يبدأ الأولاد الذكوربالتقاط رسالةٍ مفادها أن إظهار غضبهم هو أمر مقبول بينما إظهارهم مشاعر أخرى كالضعف هو أمرٌ غير مقبول." وأضاف قائلاً " إننا بهذا نساعد بناتنا أن يصبحن إنساناً لكننا نعلم أبناءنا أن يكونوا إنساناً آلياً "روبوت". علّم ولدك بأن لديه الحق في استخدام ما بجعبته من العواطف التي يملكها وأن يقف ويقول،" أنا لست غاضباً بل خائفاً, أو مشاعري مجروحة ,أو أنا بحاجة إلى المساعدة."

تُظهر البحوث أن الصبيان يتفاعلون بإيجابية أكثر من البنات في حال وجود نماذج ذكورية في بيئتهم يقلدون سلوكها. تشيرالدلائل إلى أن سلوكَ الصبيان الموجودين في أسرةٍ ليس فيها شخصية أبوية ينحو نحو السوء ويتأثر تحصيلهم العلمي سلباً أيضاً وعملهم وكسب قوتهم. يقول خبراء الاقتصاد دايفيد أوتور و ميلاني واسرمان إن هذا السلوك ناتج عن عدم رؤية هؤلاء الصبية لرجالٍ يحتملون مسؤوليات الحياة. يقول السيد بورتر " دع رجالاً جيدين يتواجدون في محيط ولدك."
وفّر لهم أيضاً نماذج نسائية قوية . تحدث عن إنجازات النساء اللواتي تعرفهن بالإضافة إلى نساء معروفات في الرياضة أو السياسة أو الإعلام. قال تيم كينغ، مؤسس أكاديميات الإعداد الحضري للأطفال ذوي الدخل المنخفض والأولاد من أصل أفريقي، "إن أبناء الأمهات العازبات لديهن عادةً الكثيرَ من الاحترام لإنجازات أمهاتهم ,وأنا أشجعهم على رؤية النساء الأخريات بهذه الطريقة".

حتى مع دمج أدوار البالغين من رجال ونساء فقد أصبحت منتجات الأطفال أكثر انقساما وفق ذكور وإناث مما كانت عليه الحال قبل 50 عاما، فتجد الأميرات ورديات اللون والشاحنات الزرقاء ليس فقط في الممرالمخصص للألعاب في مراكز التسوق بل أيضاً كرسومات على الكؤوس وفراشي الأسنان. لا عجب أن اهتمامات الأطفال في نهاية المطاف تسلك ذات الطريق.
لكن علماء الأعصاب يقولون إن هذه التفضيلات لا تولد مع الأطفال. حتى منتصف القرن العشرين، كان الوردي لون الصبي والأزرق كان للفتيات. في الدراسات، لم يُظهر الرضّع ميول قوية تجاه ألعاب بعينها. وفقا للباحثين، يظهرالفرق بينهما عندما يبدأ الأطفال بالتعرف

علّم الصبي أن يعتني بنفسه وحده
قال جوانزا كونجوفو، وهو مؤلف ومحاضر في تعليم الفتيان السود: "بعض الأمهات يربين بناتهن ولكن حبّهن يتجه لأبنائهن الذكورفتجدهن يجبرن البنات على الدراسة والقيام بالأعمال المنزلية والذهاب إلى الكنيسة لكنهن لا يجبرن الصبيان على ذلك."
يظهر هذا جليّاً في البيانات ففي دراسة أجرتها جامعة ميشيغان نجد أن الفتيات الأمريكيات اللواتي تتراوح أعمارهن بين 10 و 17 عاما يقضين ساعتين إضافيتين في الأعمال المنزلية كل أسبوع مقارنة بالأولاد،بينما هناك زيادة بنسبة 15%بين الصبيان أكثر من البنات ممن يتقاضون أجراً على قيامهم بالأعمال المنزلية.
وقالت آن ماري سلوتر، المديرة التنفيذية للمؤسسة الفكرية "نيو أميركا": "علينا بتعليم أولادنا الذكور طهي الطعام والقيام بأعمال التنظيف والعناية بأنفسهم وحدهم كي يكونوا قديرين في أعمال المنزل مثل قدرة البنات في إنجاز أعمال مكتبية خارج المنزل. "
علّم ولدك كيف يقوم برعاية الآخرين
مازالت المرأة هي التي تقدم الرعاية - للأطفال وكبار السن – بالإضافة للأعمال المنزلية حتى عندما يعمل كلا الوالدين بدوام كامل، وفقا للبيانات, مع ملاحظةِ أن فرص العمل في مجال الرعاية هي الأسرع نمواً, ولهذا عليكم بتعليم الأولاد كيفية القيام برعاية الآخرين.
وتحدثت الآنسة سلوتر عن الطريقة التي يمكن للرجل القيام بتوازنٍ بين عمله وأسرته، وكيف نتوقع من الأبناء وليس البنات فقط رعايةَ الآباء والأقارب عندما يتقدم بهم العمر. احرص على أن يساعد الأولاد في صنع حساءٍ لصديقٍ مريض أو في زيارة أحد أقاربه في المستشفى. امنحهم مسؤولية رعاية الحيوانات الأليفة والأشقاء الأصغر سناً. شجعهم على الجلوس مع الأطفال الصغار للرعاية أو التدريب أو التعليم. هناك أحد البرامج الذي يتضمن جلب أطفال صغار إلى الفصول الدراسية الابتدائية وقد لوحظ في هذه الطريقة ازدياد قدرة الطلاب على التعاطف وتقليل مستوى العدوانية.
شارك في العمل
كلما اقتضت الضرورة قاوم تلك الأدوار المقسَّمة وفق الجندر لكل من الجنسين على حدة , مثل الأعمال المنزلية ورعاية الأطفال, ولاحظ أن الأفعالَ أكثرُ تأثيراً من الكلام كما يقول دان كلاوسن وهو عالم اجتماع في جامعة ماساتشوستس، أمهرست: "إذا كانت الأم تطبخ الطعام وتنظف المنزل بينما يجزّ الأب العشب ويقضي معظم وقته خارج المنزل فهو درسٌ يتعلم منه الأطفال ,فاحذر ذلك."
شارك أيضاً في الإنفاق على البيت وكسب الرزق. قالت دراسة بأن الرجال ,الذين قامت بتربيتهن أمهات عملن لمدة عام على الأقل إلى أن وصل أبناءهن لعمر المراهقة , كانوا أكثر ميلاً للزواج من نساءٍ عاملات. ووجدت دراسة أخرى أن أبناء النساء اللواتي عملن لمدة ٍغير محددة قبل أن يصل أبناءهن لسن 14 عاماً يكرسون وقتا ً للأعمال المنزلية ورعاية الأطفال عندما يكبرون . وقالت كاثلين ماكغين، الأستاذة في كلية هارفارد للأعمال: "مواقف الرجال الذين تربوا على أيدي أمهات عاملات هي أكثر مساواة بكثير بما يتعلق بالمساواة بين الجنسين" الجندرية".
تشجيع الصداقة مع الفتيات
وجدت الأبحاث في جامعة ولاية أريزونا أنه بحلول نهاية مرحلة ما قبل المدرسة" الروضة"، يبدأ الأطفال بالفصل بين البنت والولد مما يكرس القوالب النمطية التي تفرق بين الجنسين. ولكن الأطفال الذين يتم تشجيعهم على اللعب مع الأصدقاء من الجنس الآخر تتولد لديهم مهارات أفضل في حل المشكلات وفي التواصل مع الآخر.

وقالت كريستيا براون، وهي عالمة نفس تنموي في جامعة كنتاكي، "نظموا حفلات مشتركة لأعياد الميلاد وفرقاً رياضية للأطفال الصغارحتى لا يقبل الأطفال بعد ذلك فكرةَ استبعاد مجموعةٍ على أساس الجنس. حاولوا أيضاً عدم التفريق بين الجنسين في لغة المخاطبة, فقد وجدت إحدى الدراسات أنه عندما خاطب المعلمون أطفالاً في مرحلة ما قبل المدرسة " الروضة" بقولهم "أيها الأولاد والبنات" ,بدلا من "أيها الأطفال"، رسخ لدى الطلاب معتقدات نمطية عن أدوار منفصلة للرجال وأخرى للنساء ,وبالتالي لوحظ أنهم يقضون وقتاً أقل في اللعب مع بعضهم البعض.

قدم لهم نموذجاً صحياً لحل المشاكل في المنزل. قال البروفيسور برادفورد ويلكوكس، عالم الاجتماع ومدير المشروع الوطني للزواج بجامعة فيرجينيا، " إن تعرض الأطفال للطلاق أو التعنيف يؤدي لاحقاً إلى سوء قدرتهم على حل النزاعات في علاقاتهم الرومانسية المستقبلية."
تحدث في الأمر عندما يُظهر الآخرون تعصباً ما
تقول الآنسة براون ,"يجب أن تعلق على الأمر لدى رؤيتك لإزعاج أو مضايقات تحدث أمامك، وقم بعمل تمثيلية بهذا الخصوص مع الأطفال حتى يتمكنوا هم أيضاً من التدخل في الأمر إذا حدث أمامهم."
تدخَّل أيضاُ لدى رصدك لسلوك غير ملائم وتفادى جملة" سيبقى الصبيان صبياناً بسلوكهم " فهي ليست ذريعة لسلوكهم السئ ,واجعلهم يعلمون بأنك تتوقع منهم سلوكاً أفضل .قال السيد كينغ: "كن حذراً وأنت تقوّم السلوك الذي ينطوي على إهانة أو تعصب أو عدم احترام أو إساءة."
لا تستخدم أبداً تعبير "يا بنت" على سبيل الإهانة
لا تقل - ولا تدع ابنك يقول - أن شخصاً ما يمشي أو يركض مثل فتاة، ولا تستخدم كلمة" دلوعة" أو أي من مرادفاتها كمسبّة في التقريع, والأمر ينسحب أيضاً على النكات الجنسية.
كن حذراً في ما خَفيَ من اللغة أيضاً. يظهر بحث إميلي كين، وهي عالمة اجتماع في كلية بيتس، أن الآباء يجبرون أبناءهم على أداء الأدوار التقليدية المتوقعة من جنسهم لأنهم يخشون أن يتعرض أبناءهم للمضايقة والسخرية. ثم أضافت "يمكننا أن نساعد جميعاً في هذا الأمر من خلال تجنب إطلاق الأحكام أو الفرضيات المسبقة الصغيرة اليومية حول ما يجب أن يتمتع به الطفل أو ما يناسب جنسه" . تقول ليز إليوت، عالمة الأعصاب بجامعة روزاليند فرانكلين, بأن الولد الذي يلعب بالخرز وتتم مضايقته بهذا الشأن يمكن له أن يجيب بما يلي" يمكن لأي شخص كان أن يلعب بالخرز وليس فقط الفتيات"، أو "أنا لست فتاة، ولكن هل تعتقد أن الفتيات أسوأ من الأولاد؟"
اقرأ الكثير وخصوصاً حول الفتيات والنساء
ربما كان مألوفاً لديك سماعَ أن الأولاد يتفوقون في العلوم والرياضيات أما الفتيات ففي اللغة والقراءة . يمكن لهذه القوالب النمطية أن تصبح هدفاً لتحقيق الذات. وفقاً لتحليلٍ بَعديّ أعده السيد ليبر :" تجد الأمهات يتحدثن مع بناتهن أكثر من أبناءهن الذكور". حارب هذه الصورة النمطية من خلال التحدث إلى الأولاد، والقراءة لهم وتشجيعهم أيضاً على القراءة.
اقرأ عن مجموعة واسعة من الناس وعن قصص يُكسر فيها القالب المرسوم ، وليس فقط عن الأولاد الذين ينقذون العالم والبنات اللواتي يحتجْن إلى من ينقذهن. عندما يحتوي كتاب أو خبر على قالب نمطي تحدث عنه:" لماذا الأم في "الدببة بيرنستين" دائما ترتدي ملابس المنزل ونادراً ما تغادر المنزل؟ لماذا يظهرالرجال البيض فقط في صورةٍ على الأخبار؟"
تقول الآنسة براون: "ينبغي أن يبدأ ذلك في عمر 3سنوات، عندما يبدأ الأطفال بالانتباه للصور النمطية" . "إذا لم تخبرهم بأنها قوالب نمطية فسيفترضون بأن الأمر طبيعيٌ وهذا هو واقع الحال."
الاحتفال بمرحلة الأولاد الذكور الصغار
تقول السيدة إليوت إن تربية الأبناء وفق هذه الطريقة لا يقتصر على النواهي فقط ولا يعني أن الفروق بين الجنسين ستمّحي تماماً. على سبيل المثال، جميع الثدييات الذكور تشارك في اللعب الجلف الجسدي الخشن . بغض النظر عما يحب الصبيان القيام به ,من إلقاءٍ للنكات ومشاهدة البرامج الرياضية وتسلق الأشجار وإشعال نار الحطب عند التخييم, فعلينا تعليمهم كيف يظهرون هذه القوة - قوة الاعتراف بعواطفهم . علموهم أيضاً كيف يتولّوا مسؤولية العائلة - عن طريق رعايتهم لهذه العائلة. أظهروا لهم كيف يكونون ذوي صلابة – صلابة تكفي للوقوف في وجه التعصب واللاتسامح. امنحوهم الثقة – للسعي وراء شغفهم .

المدربة: ..... عضوة في مركز مساواة دراسات المرأة منذ أربع سنوات وخريجة أدب عربي وخاضعة للدورات التي أقامها المركز في دمشق حول المفاهيم والقضايا النسوية – مفاهيم المجتمع المدني –مفاهيم الدولة الحديثة
المشاركون/ات : 15 مشارك ومشاركة من الفئة العمرية من عمر 19-40 من المهتمين بقضايا المرأة ومنهم الحاصل/ة على الشهادة الجامعية
بدأت المدربة بالترحيب بالمشاركين وعرفت على نفسها ومن ثم طلبت من المشاركين التعريف عن انفسهم
تحدثت المدربة عن عنوان الورشة وهوإتفاقية القضاء على كافة أشكال التمييز ضد المرأة وقالت بأن المساواة هي حجر الأساس لكل مجتمع ديمقراطي وفي جميع الميادين تقريبا تتعرض المراة لأوجه من عدم المساواة في الأسرة والمجتمع والعمل وتختلف الأسباب والنتائج ويدعم هذا التمييزبقاء الآراء الجامدة التي لا تتغير والعادات والتقاليد البالية التي تضر بالنساء
طرحت المدربة سؤالا لماذا نحتاج إتفاقية خاصة للمرأة ؟؟ أجابت إحدى المشاركات لأن المرأة رغم صدور الإعلان العالمي لحقوق الإنسان والعهديين الدوليين لا تزال تعاني من التمييز وتتعرض للعنف. أكدت المدربة على ما طرحته المشاركة وأضافت توعية الرجال والنساء على السواء من أجل قبول المساواة في الحقوق والتغلب على الآراء المسبقة والممارسات القائمة على أساس أدوار جامدة لا تتغير وأيضا لتحديد المجالات المميزة ضد المرأة والتدابير التي يجب إتخاذها للحد من التمييز
انتقلت المدربة للتحدث عن نشأة إتفاقية السيداو وقالت : تم إعتماد إعلان القضاء على التمييز ضد المرأة عام 1972ومن ثم طلب الأمين العام من اللجنة المعنية بمركز المرأة استطلاع آراء الدول حول وضع شيء خاص بالمرأة ففي العام 1974 بدؤوا بصياغة الإتفاقية واستمر العمل في السنوات التالية وفي عام 1977 تم تعيين فريق خاص لاتمام العمل وفي عام 1979 اعتمدت الإتفاقية وفي عام 1981 اصبحت نافذة بعد توقيع 20 دولة عليها واما سوريا فوقعت وصادقت على الإتفاقية عام 2002
البند الأول :يعني مصطلح التمييز ضد المرأة أي تفرقة أو استبعاد أو تقييد يتم على اساس الجنس ويكون من آثاره وأغراضه توهين أو إحباط الاعتراف للمرأة بحقوق الإنسان والحريات الأساسية في الميادين المختلفة بغض النظر عن حالتها الزوجية
وقالت أن هذا التعريف شامل ينطبق على كافة نصوص الإتفاقية و التمييز يسبب أضرارا للنساء سواء بقصد أو غير قصد وأيضا آثار نفسية وجسدية على وأضافت بأنه يمنع المراة من ممارسة حقوقها و حرياتها الأساسية ( الترشح ... الإنتخاب ....)
انتقلت المدربة للتحدث عن المادة الثانية والتي تحدث عن واجبات الدول التي يجب إتخاذها للقضاء على التمييز ضد المرأة ولتحقيق المساواة وبما ذلك تعديل القوانين أو تغييرها من أجل تحقيق ذلك
وقالت إحدى المشاركات بضرورة تجريم التمييز ضد المرأة والعمل على ضمان عدم التمييز حتى داخل الأسرة والقضاء على الأعراف والممارسات التميزية . وهنا طرحت المدربة سؤالا حول كيفية تحقيق ذلك ؟ فأجابت إحدى المشاركات بأن تخصص الدولة شيئا يتعلق بالمرأة فقط وباستقبال المرأة التي تتعرض للتمييز والعمل على إيجاد ثقافة بديلة للعادات والتقاليد المتبعة .
وانتقلت للتحدث عن المادة الرابعة وهي عن التدابير الخاصة المؤقتة لمكافحة التمييز وعند تحقق مبدأ المساواة تلغى هذه التدابير تلقائيا مثل نظام الكوتا والذي يطالب بإعطاء نسبة للنساء بين 20و30 بالمئة وصولا للمناصفة فعند وصولها للمناصفة تلغى الكوتا النسائية تلقائيا .وذكرت بأن الحالات الإستثناية تكون المعاملة الخاصة هي الطريقة الوحيدة لضمان المساواة الحقيقية.
أما المادة الخامسة تحدثت عن إتخاذ الدولة التدابيير المناسبة لتغيير الأنماط الإجتماعية والثقافية لسلوك الرجل والمرأة التي تكرس التمييز ضد المرأة وتعزز تنميط أدوار المرأة واقتصارها فقط على التربية والإهتمام بالأسرة لذا على الدول إيجاد هيكل عام في المجتمع يساعد على إعمال حقوق المرأة وأيضا الإعتراف بالأمومة كوظيفة إجتماعية وان تربية الأطفال مسؤولية الطرفين .وهنا ذكرت إحدى المشاركات قصتها وذلك عندما منعها والدها من إتمام دراستها وذلك بقوله لها ( آخرتك على بيت جوزك شو بدك بالشهادة تعلقيا بالمطبخ ؟؟؟)
المادة السادسة : :تتخذ الدول الأطراف جميع التدابير بمافي ذلك التشريعي منها لمكافحة جميع أشكال الإتجار بالمراة واستغلال دعارة المرأة أي على الدولة أن تنظر في الأسباب التي أدت لبغاء النساء وطرحت على المشاركين سؤالا حول هذه الأسباب فجاءت الإجابات متعددة منها الفقر والجهل والأمية وانعدام التعليم وفرص العمل .
وتحدثت المدربة بأن هذه المادة تلزم الحكومة بتوفير بدائل البغاء مثل خلق فرص عمل برامج الإحالة للوظائف فتح مراكز رعاية وإعادة تأهيل ودار النقاش حول نساء المخيمات ودور الإيواء وتعرض النساء للإستغلال الجنسي واجبارهن على العمل بالدعارة لتأمين لقمة العيش وعدم ملاحقة المسؤولين عن هذا أبدا
المادة السابعة :تتخذ الدول الأطراف التدابير المناسبة للقضاء على التمييز ضد المرأة في الحياة السياسية والعامة للبلد ولها حق المساواة مع الرجل في : 1ـالتصويت في جميع الانتخابات والاستفتاءات العامة 2ـ المشاركة في صياغة سياسة الحكومة وفي تنفيذ هذه السياسة وفي شغل الوظائف العامة وتأدية جميع المهام العامة على جميع المستويات الحكومية 3ـ المشاركة في أية منظمات وجمعيات غير حكومية تهتم بالحياة العامة والسياسية للبلد
أضافت المدربة بأن هذه المادة أيضا تؤكد على حق المرأة في الترشح أيضا وليس فقط الإنتخاب . قالت السيدة حنان بأنها لم تنتخب يوما من الأيام بل كان زوجها يأخذ هويتها وينتخب بدلا عنها فقالت المدربة بأن هذا تمييز بحد ذاته فهو يصادر حقها في الإنتخاب .
المادة الثامنة :تتخذ الدول الأطراف جميع التدابير المناسبة لتكفل للمرأة فرصة تمثيل حكومتها على المستوى الدولي والإشتراك في أعمال المنظمات الدولية
أما المادة التاسعة والتي تتحدث عن حق المرأة بتغيير جنسيتها أو الإحتفاظ بها وأيضا منحها لزوجها وأطفالها أي أن تتمتع بالمساواة القانونية بالنسبة لموضوع الجنسية فالمرأة عندما تتزوج أجنبي تجبر على أخذ جنسيته والإنتقال معه إلى بلده وفي صلب هذه المادة تحدثت المشاركات عما تعانيه المرأة السورية المتزوجة من أجنبي ورحيله وتركها دون تسجيل أطفالها وعدم قدرتها على إعطائهم جنسيتها
وانتقلت للحديث عن المادة العاشرة والتي تنص على ان التعليم أساس يخول المراة الحصول على حقوقها في كافة المجالات (عمل أسرة مجتمع ) وأيضا أهمية التعليم في تحدي العادات والتقاليد وتغيير الصورة النمطية للمرأة وتحدثت أيضا عن التدابيير التي على الدولة إتخاذها لضمان مساواة النساء بالرجل فيما بتعلق بالتعليم ومنها :
التساوي في فرص الإفادة من برامج مواصلة التعليم بما في ذلك برامج تعليم الكبار ومحو الأمية الوظيفي وغيرها من البرامج التي تهدف إلى التعجيل بتضييق أي فجوة في التعليم
خفض معدلات ترك الطالبات الدراسة وتنظيم برامج للفتيات والنساء اللواتي تركن المدرسة قبل الأوان
التساوي في فرص المشاركة النشطة في الألعاب الرياضية والتربية البدنية
إمكانية الحصول على معلومات تربوية محددة تساعد على كفالة صحة الأسرة ورفاهها
وفيما يتعلق بالمادة الحادية عشر شرحت المدربة انها تتحدث عن المساواة في العمل وفي فرص العمل والحق في إختيار العمل وأيضا الحق في الإجازات المأجورة والعمل المريح وتحديد ساعات العمل وأيضا حماية المرأة من التحرش في أماكن العمل ولا ننسى التساوي في الأجور والترقية والإجراءات التي يجب إتخاذها لسمح للأباء والأمهات بالجمع بين إلتزامات العمل ومسؤولية العائلة
المادة الثانية عشر تحدثت عن الحق في الحصول على الرعاية الصحيةوحق المرأة في التحكم بخصوبتها وتنظيم الأسرة والحق في الحصول على الرعاية الخاصة خلال الحمل وبعده وعلى الدولة أن تساعد بتوفير المعلومات عن تنظيم الأسرة وتوفير الرعاية الصحية حتى للمعدمات والفقيرات ونشر التوعية الصحية
اختتمت المدربة اليوم الاول وشكرتهم لحضورهم
اليوم الثاني : بدأت المدربة بالتحدث قليلا عن ماتم الإشارة إليه مسبقا في اليوم السابق ومن ثم انتقلت الى المادة الثالثة عشر والتي تختص بالتمويل والضمان الإجتماعي والحق في الإستحقاقات العائلية والحصول على القروض المصرفية والحق في الاشتراك في الأنشطة الترويجية والألعاب الرياضية وفي جميع جوانب الحياة الثقافية وأن تحصل على التمويل والدعم وفقا لمبدأ المساواة وتكافؤ الفرص .
وفيما يتعلق بالمادة الرابعة عشر فاختصت بالحديث عن المراة الريفيةحيث تتخذ التدابير التي تكفل لها المشاركة في وضع وتنفيذ التخطيط الإنمائي على جميع المستويات والوصول إلى تسهيلات العناية الصحية الملائمة بمافي ذلك مايتعلق بتنظيم الأسرة والاستفادة من برامج الضمان الإجتماعي إضافة إلى الحصول على جميع أنواع التدريب والتعليم الرسمي وغيرالرسمي بمافي ذلك مايتصل منه بمحو الأمية الوظيفي وكذلك التمتع بكافة الخدمات المجتمعية والإرشادية وذلك لتحقيق زيادة كفاءتها التقنية
تنظيم جماعات المساعدة الذاتية والتعاونيات من أجل الحصول على فرص اقتصادية مكافئة لفرص الرجل
المادة الخامسة عشر والتي تتحدث عن المساواة في المسائل القانونية والمدنية وحقها في التملك وإدارة ممتلكاتها وحرية التنقل والإقامة
المادة السادسة عشر فتحدثت عن التمييز في ميدان الحياة الخاصة وقانون الأسرة فيحق لها إختيار اسم العائلة وعدد الأطفال وأسمائهم أيضا وأن لها نفس الحق في الزواج والطلاق وحقوق الملكية والرعاية والولاية والوصاية على الأطفال وأيضا الحق في إختيار الزوج وتحديد الحد الأدنى للزواج
بعد ذلك إنتقلت المدربة وعرضت المواد الي تحفظت عليها الحكومة السورية وهي : المادة الثانية كاملة وبتحفظها هذا فهي تقضي على الإتفاقية لأن مضمون هذه المادة تغيير التشريعات والقوانين التمييزية ضد المراة وكذلك الفقرة الثانية من المادة التاسعة المتعلقة بمنح الجنسية ونسبت الحكومة ذلك إلى حق الدم أي ان الرجل هو الوحيد الذي يحق له نقل جنسيته والفقرة ج د و ز من المادة السادسة عشر وتم نقاشها من قبل المشاركين و تطرقت المدربة للحديث عن موقف الإسلاميين المتشددين من إتفاقية السيداو ومعارضتهم لها بحجة مخالفتها للشريعة الإسلامية وأن تطبيق هذه الإتفاقية يعد مخالفا للشريعة الإسلامية وبان الكثير من بنود الإتفاقية يشجع على الإباحة الجنسية ويقلل من كرامة المرأة ويحط من قدرها ولو ان المساواة من حق المرأة لما خلق الله جنسسين ذكرا وأنثى
وعرضت المدربة بشكل مقتضب طريقة عمل اللجنة المختصة باتفاقية السيداو وكيفية تقديم التقارير ومناقشتها كل اربع سنوات وعرضت التقرير الذي قدمته الحكومة السورية عام 2014 للجنة السيداو وعرضت الأسئلة التي وجهتها اللجنة للوفد الحكومي حول الإختفاء القسري للناشطات المدنيات وعن عدم إلغاء الحكومة السورية التحفظات على الإتفاقية وأيضا عن الإجراءات التي إتخذتها الحكومة من أجل تغيير قانون الجنسية وتحدث التقرير الذي قدمته الحكومة السورية عن وضع النساء في المناطق المنتشرة فيها الجماعات الإسلامية وعن وضع المراة في الجولان السوري المحتل
ومن ثم تحدثت المدربة عن تقرير الظل الذي تقدمه المنظمات الغير حكومية ومنظمات المجتمع المدني ويجب ان يكون شاملا وعرضت المدربة بضع نقاط من تقرير الظل المقدم عام 2014 ومنها الدستور الجديد عام2012 والذي يفرض الحكم الديني على النساء والإستغلال الجنسي وتجاهل صوت النساء في المفاوضات
إختتمت المدربة الورشة وشكرت المشاركات لحسن إصغائهم ولاهتمامهم
وبذلك انتهت الورشة .

Workshop on the Convention of Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)
Date of the workshop :…..
Trainer: She has been a member of Equality / Women’s Studies Center for four years, and a graduate of Arabic Literature. She underwent the workshops, conducted by our Center in Damascus on feminist issues and concepts, civil society and the modern state concepts.
Participants: 15 participants from the age group 19-40 years old, of those interested in women’s issues, as some of them are holders of the a university degree.
The trainer started the session by introducing herself, asking the audience to do the same. She said that the title of the workshop refers to the convention of eliminating all forms of discrimination against women, adding that equality is the cornerstone of every democratic society. In all the fields, women are exposed to inequality, be it the family, society or work, due to various reasons and results, supported by the rigid unchanged views as well as the worn-out traditions and norms that harm women tremendously.
The trainer asked” Why do need a convention on women? “One of the female participants answered that despite the issuance of the UN Declaration of Human Rights and the two Covenants, women still suffer from discrimination and exposure to violence. The trainer reiterated the participant’s answer, adding that the raising the awareness of both men and women is crucial to reach equality in rights and overcome preconceived ideas and practices that are based on unchanged rigid views, with focus on the necessity of identification of the fields of discrimination against women and the measures to limit it.
The trainer moved to talk about the creation of CEDAW and said: The adoption of the Declaration on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women started in 1972 when the UN Secretary-General requested from the Commission on the Status of Women to conduct an opinion poll to know the countries’ standpoints about developing a law on women. In 1974, the agreement was drafted as work on it had continued in the following years. In 1977, a special action team was appointed to complete the work, as in 1979 CEDAW was adopted. In 1981, it entered into force following the signature and ratification of 20 countries. Syria, however, signed and ratified the Convention in 2002.
Article 1: The term Discrimination Against Women includes any separation, exclusion or restriction based on gender that may lead, in its effects and objectives, to weaken or thwart the acknowledgment of human rights for women and the basic freedoms in various fields, regardless of the marital status. The trainer added that this definition applies to all the provisions of the Convention, as discrimination causes damage to women, intentionally or unintentionally, resulting in psychological and physical effects, preventing women from exercising their rights and basic freedoms such as candidacy and elections and other else.
The trainer moved to talk about Article 2 on obligations of countries, that should be fulfilled to eliminate discrimination against women and to achieve equality, including the amendment or change of laws in order to achieve this objective.
One of the female participants suggested the criminalization as a penalty in the incident of discrimination against women, especially the non-discrimination inside the family, with the aim of eliminating the discriminatory norms and practices. At this point, the trainer asked about the means to achieve that. A female participant answered that the state should take a relevant measure in this respect, such as embracing the discriminated women and working on figuring out an alternative culture to the prevalent discriminatory traditions and customs.
The trainer moved to Article 4, on temporary special measures taken to combat discrimination, which will automatically be canceled when the principle of equality is achieved. For instance, quota for women, which calls for giving 20-30% share for women, shall be automatically canceled upon achieving the equal share with, taking into consideration that this special treatment is an exceptional case, used in the time being, to ensure genuine equality.
Article 5 calls for the States parties to take appropriate measures to modify the social and cultural patterns of the conduct of women and men, which have perpetuated discrimination against women and promoted the stereotypical women’s roles to be only limited to upbringing and caring for the family. Thus, the States Parties have to figure out a societal general structure whereby women's rights are realized, viewing motherhood as a social function assumed by both mother and father alike. At that point, one of the female participants told her personal story when her father objected to her completing her studies by saying, “You will end up in your husband’s home! What is the use of an academic degree? Do you want to hang it on his kitchen wall?”
Article 6: States Parties shall take all appropriate measures, including legislation, to suppress all forms of traffic in women and exploitation of prostitution of women. Therefore, the state should consider the reasons, which have led to the women prostitution. The trainer asked a question about the likely reasons, as answers included poverty, ignorance, literacy, lack of education and unemployment.
The trainer said that this article obliges the government to provide alternatives to prostitution, such as creating job opportunities, employment programs and opening care and rehabilitation centers. The discussion also addressed the Syrian women at the refugee camps and shelter centers in which women are sexually exploited and forced to work as prostitutes to secure a living, and the impunity of the prosecutors of such misery.
Article 7: States Parties shall take all appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against women in the political and public life of the country and, in particular, shall ensure to women, on equal terms with men, the right to vote in all elections and public referenda. Women have the right to participate in the formulation of government policy and the implementation thereof and to hold public office and perform all public functions at all levels of government. Women would participate in non-governmental organizations and associations concerned with the public and political life of the country.
The trainer went on to say that this article stresses the right of women to candidacy not only their rights to elections. Hanan , one of the female participants, said that she has never participated in the election process as her husband used to take her identification card and do the voting instead of her. The trainer commented by saying that such behavior is sheer discrimination against Hanan as her husband confiscated her right to vote in the elections.
Article 8: States Parties shall take all appropriate measures to ensure to women the opportunity to represent their governments at the international level and to participate in the work of international organizations.
Article 9: It addresses women’s rights to change or retain their nationality, passing their nationality to their spouses and children; namely to enjoy legal equality in this respect, as when women marry a foreigner, they are forced to take his nationality and move to live inhis country. In light of this article, the female participants spoke about the suffering of the Syrian women, married to foreigners who depart and leave them behind without registering their children and their inability to give their children their mothers’ nationality.
Article 10: States Parties shall take all appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against women in order to ensure to them equal rights with men in education, family and society, stressing the importance of education in the fight against traditions and customs, changing the stereotypes of women’s roles, enjoying on an equal footing with men the access to education including the right to the same opportunities of men for access to programs of continuing education, including adult and functional literacy programs, particularly those aimed at reducing, at the earliest possible time, any gap in education existing between men and women, reducing female student drop-out rates and the organization of programs for girls and women who have left school prematurely, providing the same opportunities to participate actively in sports and physical education, ensuring access to specific educational information to ensure the health and well-being of families.
Article 11: The trainer said that it addresses equality at work, employment opportunities, and choice of work type, paid leaves, comfortable work and the right to limiting the working hours. It tackles the protection of women from sexual harassment in the workplace, equal pay and promotion, and the measures taken to allow both parents to harmonize their work obligations with their family responsibility.
Article 12: States Parties shall take all appropriate measures to ensure the right of women in the field of health care services, even to the extremely poor women, including those related reproduction control and family planning, pregnancy and confinement, disseminating health care awareness.
The trainer concluded the session and thanked the audience for attending.
Second Day:
The trainer started by recalling the previous day’s discussions then she moved to Article 13 whereby the States Parties shall take all appropriate measures to ensure the right to family benefits, bank loans, and the right to participate in recreational activities, sports and all aspects of cultural life, along with all sorts of funding and support, on a basis of the principles of equality and equal opportunities of men and women.
Article 14: States Parties shall take all appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against women in rural areas to participate in the elaboration and implementation of development planning at all levels, and to have access to adequate health care facilities, social security programs and services in family planning, to have access to all types of training and education, formal and non-formal, including that relating to functional literacy, as well as, inter alia, the benefit of all community and guidance services, in order to increase their technical proficiency, and to organize self-help groups and co-operatives in order to obtain equal access to economic opportunities with men.
Article 15: States Parties shall accord to women equality with men before the law, as women have the right to conclude contracts and administer property, ensuring the women’s freedom of movement and the freedom to choose their residence and domicile.
Article 16: It gives the right to women in all matters relating to their private lives and family relations and to decide freely and responsibly on the name of their family, the number and names of their children. Women also have the rights and responsibilities with regard to marriage, divorce, ownership, guardianship, wardship, and trusteeship of children. Women have the liberty to choose their spouses and to specify a minimum age for marriage.
After that, the trainer mentioned the articles that the Syrian government puts reservation over; namely, Article 2 fully, as with this reservation, the Syrian government completely destroys CEDAW, because this article stipulates the necessity of changing the legislation and discriminatory laws against women. The Syrian government also put a reservation on paragraph 2 of Article 9, regarding women granting of citizenship to their children, claiming it violates the men’s blood right, meaning that man is the only one who is entitled to the transfer of nationality. Four other paragraphs of Article 16, earlier discussed with the participants, are reserved, too.
The trainer turned to review the position of radical Islamists of CEDAW and their opposition to this Convention under the pretext of violating the Islamic law, claiming that the application of it is contrary to the Islamic law and that a lot of its clauses encourage sexual looseness, by thus doing reducing the dignity of women and demeaning them, adding that if equality between men and women is to be recognized, God would not have created men and women as different in sexes in the first place.
The trainer concisely presented the methods adopted by the competent CEDAW Convention Committee; such as submitting reports every four years. She introduced the report, submitted by the Syrian government in 2014 to the CEDAW Committee, reading and discussing the questions posed by the Committee to the Syrian government delegation about the enforced disappearance of female civil activists , asking about the delay on part of the Syrian government in cancelling the reservations to the Convention, and also about the actions taken by the government in order to change the citizenship law. Then she read the report, submitted by the Syrian government on the status of women in the areas under control of the Islamic groups and the status of women in the occupied Syrian Golan.
The trainer talked about the shadow report, provided by non-governmental organizations and civil society organizations, stressing that it must be comprehensive. She read a few points of the shadow report, submitted in 2014, including the new constitution of 2012, which imposes the religious rule and sexual exploitation over women, ignoring the voice of women in the negotiations.
The workshop concluded and the trainer thanked the participants for their attention and interest.
Thus workshop ended.
Results of the workshop:
• Male and female participants are familiar now with CEDAW.
• Participants are aware of the reservations of the Syrian government on CEDAW’s articles and paragraphs.
• Emphasis is laid on the importance of CEDAW in achieving gender equality.
• The role and importance of the work of women's civil society organizations are highlighted to put pressure on the Syrian government to lift reservations off CEDAW Convention.
