O Congresso e o Tribunal Supremo funcionam como contenções ao poder do Presidente. Contrabalançam o Presidente, e um ao outro, junto com o Presidente formam um conjunto que se destina a manter a integridade da Constituição Americana. Se o Presidente cumprisse as suas promessas (algo improvável), e logo concebesse novas políticas e exigências, precisaria de pedir mais ajuda. Na realidade, quando é que o seu trabalho pode ser oficialmente dado por terminado, até que ponto podemos dizer que o trabalho está feito? Como é que nós definimos sucesso, quando os resultados que medem o seu sucesso provêm de um processo infinito e que tem possibilidades infinitas? Today, the ‘Personal Presidency’ is believed to be the best solution or condition of governance for the large democratic society of America, however it also seemingly throws the individual who is running for presidency into a ‘catch 22’ situation. There are constitutionally in built restraints to the President Elect’s power, in the form of the Congress and Supreme Courts. Acting as counter balances to the President and to each other, each is poised in line with one another to maintain the integrity of the American Constitution. That, the President, were he to fulfil his promises (an unlikely occasion), and to therefore engender a new round of policies, with their own demands, which would elicit more requests for ‘help’, leaves us asking the question, where does his job begin and end? How can he possibly achieve ‘success’, when the ‘results’ by which his abilities are judged come from an infinite process with infinite possibilities? Democracy in its theory is always something to be protected at all costs. Nonetheless in light of this year’s election, it seems the apparent ignorance of the public, to readily accept, acutely marketed individuals; that in reality possess very little skill, ability in their role or experience in the field; is deeply concerning. It raises a question as to the functionality of democracy when teamed with an uninformed electorate. To set the scene, rhetoric escalates in America, expectations leap from one stretch to another, adventurism is fueled abroad, and all this is set to the backdrop, of a world where failure can mean annihilation. Donald Trump has indeed, a very interesting four years ahead.

Source text - Portuguese A Holanda, um estado caracterizado pelo seu liberalismo e sociedades tolerantes, viu uma mudança em táctica em relação ao tratamento das comunidades de imigrantes. Há 50 anos não tinha muitos estrangeiros, em 2010 4.4% da população era imigrante (de novo gostaria de dizer que inevitavelmente, hoje esta percentagem vai ser maior). Na décadas 1960 e 1970 foram aceites trabalhadores estrangeiros procurando asilo das guerras no Iraque, Kosovo, África e Afeganistão, entretanto isso foi antes dos eventos de ‘9/11’ em 2001, do bombardeio de Madrid em 2004, sendo que depois desses eventos a política mudou. The Netherlands, a state strongly characterised by it’s supposed ‘Liberalism’ and tolerant societies, has seen a change in tactic towards it’s immigrant communities. Where half a century ago, it had few foreigners, in 2010 (again I stress this inevitably will have increased) 4.4% of the population were immigrants. In the 1960s and 1970s they did welcome foreign workers seeking asylum from wars in Iraq, Kosovo, Africa and Afghanistan, however this was before the events of 9/11 in 2001 and the Madrid bombings in 2004; after which policy changed. In 2002 the Netherland’s parliament voted to deport 26,000 foreigners who had arrived in the Netherlands by request of ‘political asylum’.
