Adventure Racing is for a special breed of person... Someone with an insatiable thirst for adventure... not afraid to take on the impossible... and someone not afraid to push themselves to the limit of human endurance. Using only a compass, teamwork and a whole lot of courage, teams of four must ride, hike, paddle and navigate their way over hundreds of kilometres, often without any sleep. Its about overcoming fatigue, stress, hunger and sleep deprivation; and if you can keep your sanity, your only reward is finishing a race and knowing you’ve completed one of the hardest challenges in life. This is not a career for the faint-hearted, this is about testing yourself in one of life’s most extreme theatres.
Welcome to the Adventure Racing World Championships staged in the magnificent, Shoalhaven region of NSW Australia, where 100 of the world’s best teams will compete in ‘Survival of the Fittest’ - Australia. Located on the East Coast on New South Wales Australia three hours south of Sydney, the Shoalhaven region is renowned for its picturesque scenery, its unspoilt beaches and rivers and its pristine environment. It’s a holiday playground drawing visitors from all over the world. The Shoalhaven is also an adventure paradise and today the region plays host to 100 teams from 40 countries here to compete in the prestigious world titles, and the race has attracted the strongest field ever assembled. With just hours to study a map the teams will kayak, trek and ride across 14 stages, with the course stretching 630km and if they're still standing the leading teams are expected to finish in Ulladulla in just under 4 days. It’s an extreme challenge that will push the teams to breaking point. Just finishing the race is a challenge within itself, and yet the top teams will race one another all the way to the finish.
With all the training and preparation behind them over 400 competitors gathered on the foreshore of Huskisson for the start of the epic race.
Three, two, one. Go!
The first leg is a 35km kayak around spectacular Jervis Bay, a large harbour dotted with sandy beaches and an abundance of sea life. Everyone was looking to get off on a good start there are so many skills required to be a leading adventure racer and pacing yourself over such a long distance is fundamental to success. It isn’t long before the local dolphins were out in force to greet the teams and putting on a spectacular display. Early in the race and already the highly experienced Seagate team from New Zealand move to the front, with 4 world titles to their name they’re out to show everyone they mean business.

'모험 경주 월드 챔피언십'이 호주 뉴사우스웨일스주의 숄헤이븐에서 열렸습니다. 전 세계에서 뽑힌 100개 팀이 '적자생존' 호주 편에 모여 경주를 벌입니다. 시드니에서 세 시간을 달려 뉴사우스웨일스주 동해로 가면 아름다운 경치로 유명한 숄헤이븐 지역이 나옵니다. 이곳의 해변과 강가는 오염되지 않고 깨끗해서 세계 각지에서 휴양객이 몰려옵니다. 숄헤이븐은 모험 천국이기도 합니다. 무려 40개국 100개 팀이 세계 타이틀 자리를 놓고 바로 이곳에서 대결을 펼칩니다. 역대 최고의 역량을 갖춘 팀들이 경주에 참여합니다. 선수들은 몇 시간 동안 지리를 익히고 카약과 하이킹, 자전거로 14개 구간을 이동합니다. 총 거리는 630km에 달하죠. 끝까지 버텨 낸다면 나흘 내 울라둘라에 도착해 경주를 완주할 수 있습니다. 이 도전이 인내심에 한계를 가져올 것입니다. 완주 자체가 쉽지 않은 여정이죠. 하지만 상위 팀들은 끝까지 경쟁할 겁니다.
400개가 넘는 팀이 모든 훈련과 준비를 마치고 허스키슨의 바닷가에 모여 경주에 나갈 준비를 합니다.

첫 번째 구간인 저비스만에서 카약으로 35km를 건넙니다. 백사장이 아름답고 해양 생물이 풍부한 곳이죠. 모든 팀은 출발이 순조롭길 바랍니다. 경주에서 선두를 차지하려면 기술이 뛰어나야 하고 속도를 일정하게 유지해야 장거리를 완주할 수 있습니다. 어디선가 돌고래가 나타나 선수들을 맞아 주며 멋지게 재주를 부립니다. 경주 초반부터 뉴질랜드의 시게이트가 노련하게 선두로 나섭니다. 이미 네 번을 우승한 만큼 제대로 실력을 보여 줍니다.
