English:

I'm a Mexican freelance translator based in Taiwan, where I've been both teaching Spanish and translating for two years and over three years respectively. I've been lucky enough to live in different countries since I left Mexico in 2001. For the past 19 years, I've been learning languages and getting to know different cultures. My history with English goes way back though. Like most Mexicans, I was forced to learn it since 7th grade and eventually came to love it when I finally got to use during my first trip to Canada. All that just to say that I'm bilingual. Well, polyglot actually. French came to me naturally after studying in France for three years, and I say naturally because unlike English, I didn't have to learn that many grammatical differences. Chinese, on the other hand, is a whole different beast. I've been studying the language formally for 5 years and living in Taiwan for 10 years, and I've been humbled to say that I have an intermediate command of Mandarin.

During my years as an undergrad student at the (back then) experimental program of Chinese Language and Culture for Foreigners, I had to learn to function in complete immersion. The experience wasn't as good for my Chinese as it was for my translation skills; all the materials were in Mandarin and I had to translate them to study for the many examinations I had to take. Anyone familiar with traditional Chinese education can tell you how important is peer pressure and tests. So I've got to learn to work under constant pressure from teachers and classmates to keep up with a system designed to perfect you or break you. It helped me later on while working as a Sales Man in a local company, though I found out that I'm better at letters than at numbers. Graduate-level classes felt like a breeze after those four years.
