Square Enix has said that it will not consider selling the company, and has not received any offers after a report claimed 'multiple' potential buyers were interested in an acquisition.
CTFN reported that two bankers had indicated that several potential buyers were interested in purchasing the developer/publisher behind Final Fantasy and Outriders.
Bloomberg Japan then reported the news, which led Square Enix to respond.
"Bloomberg has reported today that there is interest from several buyers to acquire Square Enix," reads a press release.
"However, this report is not based on any announcement by Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. We do not consider selling off the company or any part of its businesses, nor have we received any offer from any third party to acquire the company or any part of its businesses."
It is of course possible that both sides of this story are true – there may well be parties interested in Square Enix, and Square Enix itself might be unwilling to sell to them. That said, analyst David Gibson pointed to the idea that this could be bankers trying to "drum up business" in Square Enix.
To back up Gibson's idea, Bloomberg subsequently reported that shares in Square Enix rose by 12% after the report went out – their highest rise in eight months.
Video game acquisitions have been big business recently, with the last year alone seeing Microsoft buying ZeniMax Media for $7.5 billion, Epic Games buying Mediatonic (Fall Guys), and EA snapping up Codemasters after Take-Two showed an interest.
Japan has been seen as a natural next step for some major gaming companies, with Head of Xbox Phil Spencer recently shooting down the idea that Microsoft was in contact with a number of developers in the country about potential acquisitions.
On the other hand, Sony has had to counter the idea that the company is sidelining Japan, but we've seen the company's storied Japan Studio re-organized this year, leading to a mass exodus of developers.

By definition, a classic film is one that is 25 years old or older and has made an impact on culture and cinematic zeitgeist. Plus, there's that little thing about being timeless. Spend your evenings with the greats like Charlie Chaplin, Audrey Hepburn, Marlon Brando, and Humphrey Bogart and be dazzled by directors like Mike Nichols, Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg. 1 - Citizen Kane (1941)

Even without the dialogue, you won't miss it, cause this film is all heart.
4 - The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Dorothy joins pals Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion on an epic adventure back home through the land of Oz. The three find themselves on the run from the Wicked Witch of the West and all her schemes.
5 - The Godfather (1972)
Aging mob boss Vito Corleone passes on the family business to his resistant son Michael. The first of the Godfather series by director Francis Ford Coppola and winner of an Academy Award for Best Actor for Marlon Brando's portrayal of Vito Corleone.
6 - The Sound of Music (1965)
A true musical classic, a young reluctant nun, Maria, goes to nanny the rambunctious von Trapp family and finds more than she bargains for in the strict matriarch Georg. On the verge of World War II, the family forms a singing troupe—the von Trapp Family Singers—as a way of escaping to safety.
7 - To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
Based on the 1960 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee, To Kill A Mocking Bird tells the story of Scout Finch and her childhood friends as they spy on their neighbor Boo Radley. Meanwhile, her father. a respected widower and lawyer, Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck) is defending a black man wrongly accused. The trial exposes the children to the realities and evils of racism and prejudice.
8 - West Side Story (1961)
Shakespeare comes to the silver screen again in this musical retelling of the classic Romeo and Juliet story set in the then modern setting of sixties New York City. Capturing the racial tensions of the time, the Puerto Rican Sharks battle the white Jets for turf on the upper west side. In the middle of the chaos, Tony and Maria meet and fall in love and force everyone to reconsider what all the fighting is for. An Academy Award-winning performance by Rita Moreno with music and lyrics by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.
9 - Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)
Billed as an "American space-opera film," Star Wars' epic first "episode" introduces us to an endearing cast of characters. We join Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, captain of the Millennium Falcon, two lovable droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, and a larger-than-life Chewbacca (Chewy) as they set off to search the galaxy for Princess Leia—held hostage by the famed Imperial leader Darth Vader. Writer and Director George Lucas draw us into an anthology that challenges its character’s bravery, friendship, allegiance, and ability to see dark from light. From the size of Star Wars fandom today, you know this will be a forever classic.
10 - All About Eve (1950)
A young aspiring starlet, Eve, manages to weasel her way into the social circles and good graces of Broadway star Margot Channing. Taking Eve under her wing, Margot begins to see with every part she seems to begin to lose, that Eve is after much more than just advice and friendship—she's after Margot's career! Bette Davis delivers an Academy Award-nominated performance for her role as Margot Channing.
11 - Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Sunset Boulevard is a cautionary tale of what can happen when the lights of fame grow dim on an aging Hollywood silent movie star. Written by Billy Wilder (Some Like it Hot, The Apartment), a young aspiring screenwriter is hired by an aging starlet wanting him to write her comeback movie role. Thinking he has the upper hand in the relationship, what ensues is madness, intrigue, and tragedy. A true Hollywood classic.
12 - Vertigo (1958)
In the pantheon of Alfred Hitchcock movies, there are probably enough that could be considered classics to fill this whole list, but if you've never tapped into his anthology, start by giving Vertigo a viewing. Less horror and gore, more psychologically mind bending. Jimmy Stewart leads the cast of this story of an ex-police officer with a fear of heights is hired to help protect a young wife from committing suicide. A masterwork of cinematography, with stunning wide shots of the San Francisco Bay area, Hitchcock eventually reveals that the job is not all that it originally seemed.
13 - The Graduate (1967)
Recent graduate, Benjamin Braddock is pulled into an illicit affair with the much older wife of a family friend, Mrs. Robinson. Aimless and searching for what's next, things only get more complicated for Ben when he falls in love with Mrs. Robinson's daughter. Come to this film for stellar performances by Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft and Academy Award winning directing by Mike Nichols and stay for the soundtrack by Simon & Garfunkel.
14 - Chinatown (1975)
A young private detective gets in a little over his head when he is hired by a wife to investigate the goings on of her husband. Thinking it's just a typical case of adultery, Jake Gittes (played by Jack Nicholson), soon finds out not everyone is who they seem, involving him in tangled web of family drama, city corruption, and murder. A noir-type film in the vein of The Maltese Falcon, Jack Nicholson gives a Golden Globe Award-winning performance.
15 - Singin' in the Rain (1952)
It's a rough transition in Hollywood from silent films to the "talkies" and silent film power-couple Don (Gene Kelly) and Lina (Jean Hagen) are in for a challenge when they discover that one of them is ready for sound and the other is not. Hilarious gaffs even diction lessons can't make Lina sound like the starlet she exudes on screen so up and coming actress Kathy (Debbie Reynolds) is called in to do secret voice-over work. Co-Directed by Gene Kelly himself, this hilarious and endearing film is chock-full of song, dancing, and comedy...and of course that famous dancing in the rain scene!
16 - In the Heat of the Night (1967)
Virgil Tibbs, a Black police detective from Philadelphia, must join forces with the racist police chief who falsely accused him of murder to find the real killer. Making their way through rural Mississippi and all levels of society, they come face to face with racial tensions, class struggles, and uncovering unlikely enemies as well as friends. With an Academy Award-winning performance by Sydney Poitier, this was an important film not only having a black male lead, but also exposing institutional racism in such a clear way during the height of the civil rights era.
17 - Some Like It Hot (1959)
Writer and Director Billy Wilder delivers another hilarious comedy romp with stellar performances by Jack Lemon, Tony Curtis, and Marilyn Monroe. Lemon and Curtis play two musicians that witness a murder by the mob and go on the run disguising themselves as two female musicians in a band making their way down to Florida. Complications ensue when one of them falls in love with an attractive and friendly bandmate (Monroe) and the other gets caught up in the wiles of a multi-millionaire.
18 - 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Adapted from the short story by Arthur C. Clarke and directed by acclaimed director Stanley Kubrick, a strange black obelisk is the link between the past and the future in this sci-fi odyssey. Astronauts on a puzzling mission, soon find themselves at odds with their station's computer system HAL. A fight between man and machine takes this film to some strange places.
19 - Do the Right Thing (1989)
Hailed as one of Spike Lee's masterpieces, Do the Right Thing explores the racial tensions that erupt in the predominantly African American community "Bed Stuy" in Brooklyn on a single summer day. Nominated for two Academy Awards, this film was deemed "culturally significant" by the Library of Congress.
20 - On The Waterfront (1954)
In an Academy Award-winning role, Marlon Brando plays Terry Malloy, a dock worker and aspiring boxer. Under the thumb of a local mob boss, Terry must join forces with a local priest and a young woman whose brother was murdered before he could testify to the mob boss's control of the docks. Against the advice of his lawyers, Terry plans to risk it all and testify himself.
21 - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
This groundbreaking film was the first feature-length animated film by Walt Disney Productions of its kind. In this Grimm fairytale, a young princess—Snow White—must escape her jealous stepmother. 22 - Gone with the Wind (1939)
Adapted from the 1936 novel by Margaret Mitchell, Gone with The Wind is an epic Civil War tale surrounding the life and times of peevish Scarlett O'Hara and all the loves of her life. This film, while containing some problematic themes and images, was one of a kind in its day in terms of scale and the vast number of people involved in the production. Winner of the Best Picture Academy Award as well as first Academy Award to be given to an African American for Hattie McDaniel's best supporting role, Mammy.
23 - Stagecoach (1939)
A rag tag group of travelers makes their way across the American west in this groundbreaking western film by John Huston. John Wayne plays the outlaw Ringo Kid and must help protect his fellow travelers from the looming Apache threat.
24 - Lawrence Of Arabia (1962)
This epic historical drama follows the real life of T.E. Lawrence, who was sent to Arabia to serve as an intermediary and translator for the British in their attempts to fight the Turks.
25 - Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
In this classic James Dean film, he plays Jim Stark, a troubled youth trying to get off on the right foot in his new town and school, but the town seems to have problems all its own. He befriends a school misfit and falls for a local girl (Natalie Wood), but his troubles seem to follow him when he gets mixed up with the town bully. Come for the classic James Dean smoldering looks, stay for the vintage drag racing.
26 - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1966)
This film follows the legendary robbers and outlaws who after an ill-fated train robbery are on the run and must make it alive to Bolivia.
27 - The Apartment (1960)
A man (Jack Lemmon) lends his apartment to company bosses for their extra-marital affairs. When his manager starts using his place in exchange for promotions, he's disappointed to find out that the mistress involved with his boss is the woman (Shirley MacLaine) he's interested in. Will he choose love or his career?
28 - Dr. No (1962)
See where the Bond legend began in this first film with the original Bond, Sean Connery. Follow Bond to Jamaica as he battles the enigmatic Dr. No—the leader of the legendary crime syndicate "Spectre." Complete with Bond girls, classic cars, and a strange evil lair (that would one day inspire future Austin Powers movies).
29 - King Kong (1933)
And actress and director are on location at a remote island in the Indian Ocean, when she is captured by natives to be sacrificed to the giant gorilla "god" Kong. When she is rescued, Kong is captured and taken to New York City—which is where the damage begins! This iconic monster movie has spawned countless remakes and still stands as a classic poster image for the Empire State Building and New York City portrayed in film.
30 - Funny Girl (1968)
In this Academy Award-winning performance, Barbara Streisand plays Fanny Brice, an endearing and lovable character who rising the ranks from Vaudeville bit-player to Broadway star. While her career is booming, her personal life with husband Nick (Omar Sharif) is complicated and disappointing. Filled with humor, song, and classic Streisand relatability.
31 - Annie Hall (1977)
Aside from current problematic associations with Woody Allen, this film shines largely due to Diane Keaton's performance as nightclub singer Annie Hall herself. Different than many of the romantic comedies of its time, Annie Hall depicted real-life relationships between men and women and conversations in a very casual and genuine way. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture, with cameos by Christopher Walken, Shelley Duvall, and Paul Simon.
32 - Jaws (1975)
The first box office blockbuster of its kind, Jaws, the breakout film by director Steven Spielberg made us all scared of going in the water for a little while after we first saw it. The seaside town of Amity Island is threatened by a giant great white shark that has been attacking and killing swimmers in its waters. The police chief (Roy Scheider), a scientist (Richard Dreyfuss), and an eccentric boat captain Quint (Robert Shaw) strike out on a mission to capture the beast. John Williams delivers a haunting soundtrack only a couple notes long. Duh duh! Duh duh!
33 - Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)
Based on the book by Truman Capote, Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) lives in a world of her own making where you where tiaras and pearls and eat breakfast in front of the windows at Tiffany's. Working as a high-end escort and in search of wealthy man to marry she meets an aspiring writer in her building that challenges everything she's been working for.
34 - Duck Soup (1933)
The Marx Brothers are at their best in Duck Soup, a tale of countries at odds and the complications of power and leadership and all the hilarity that ensues when you have comedians serving as national leaders and spies! A must see for the early slapstick genre.
35 - 12 Angry Men (1957)
An innovative film for its time, 12 Angry Men depicts the deliberation by 12 jurors around a death row case involved a young teenager. With the only location being the deliberation room, we witness intense debates and one juror (Henry Fonda) serve as the only one who doubts whether they've heard all the evidence. Knowing that life or death is on the line, they feel the weight of their decision with every passing minute. Expertly directed by Sidney Lumet.

A vital helium reserve in the US that supplies the global market will stop selling to the public in September 2022, threatening a supply crunch.
The US government has owned up to 1bn cubic meters of helium gas in a Federal Helium Reserve (FHR) – managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) – since 1925. It is now disposing of its remaining helium and assets by transfer to other federal bodies and public sales.
The end of public sales in September, alongside major incidents at a helium factory in Russia – a key supplier – and tensions with Ukraine, mean prices are expected to skyrocket.
Tom Kool, head of operations at price-tracking website Oilprice, said: “A helium supply crunch may be growing more critical with each passing day… The world is quickly coming to grips with one of the biggest supply squeezes of our times.”
Helium gas prices have risen dramatically since 2019, when the US government sold at a rate of $280 per million cubic feet (Mcf). Now that figure has more than doubled, selling for up to $600/Mcf.
The US produces 40% of the world’s helium supply, with the majority coming from the FHR. The FHR has reserved all helium found on federal land since 1925, and purchased crude helium extracted by natural gas producers for storage at its facility in Amarillo, Texas. This purchasing policy accumulated 1bn cubic meters of helium by 1995 and led to the reserve being $1.4bn in debt.
The FHR is currently the only helium storage facility in the world and has sold crude helium to private companies since 1996, often at below-market prices, in order to clear the debt.
The FHR was established to provide gas for airships and in the 1950s supplied the government with coolant for the Cold War and Space Race.
William Perry Pendley, deputy director for policy and programs at the BLM, said in 2020: “Now it is time for the US government to remove itself from the helium business, and allow the private sector to further develop this industry to meet the supply needs of the United States, creating a sustainable economic model and jobs for Americans.”
As the disposal deadline approaches, however, other global issues are forcing helium prices higher. A fire and an explosion at one of the world’s largest natural gas processing facilities in Amur, Russia, means helium production at the facility will stop for at least six months.
Ongoing tensions with Ukraine are also likely to impact Russian production, which is the fifth largest helium producer in the world, according to the US Geological Survey.
Phil Kornbluth, president of Kornbluth Helium Consulting, called the helium supply chain ‘complex’ and ‘highly unpredictable’ in an article for Gasworld in January.
Concerning the Amur explosion, he said: “Helium markets are now likely to remain tight throughout 2022, with the transition to plentiful supply pushed out by at least one year to 2023.”
Helium is mostly used for its cooling properties, for example in MRIs, but also plays a significant role in producing hard disk drives and semiconductor chips.

Esclerose múltipla é uma doença crônica, provavelmente autoimune, em que o sistema imunológico agride a bainha de mielina que recobre os neurônios, comprometendo a função do sistema nervoso.
Esclerose múltipla é uma doença inflamatória crônica, provavelmente autoimune. Por motivos genéticos ou ambientais, na esclerose múltipla, o sistema imunológico começa a agredir a bainha de mielina (capa que envolve todos os axônios) que recobre os neurônios e isso compromete a função do sistema nervoso. Tais características fazem com que o paciente não dê importância às primeiras manifestações da doença que é remitente-recorrente, ou seja, os sintomas vão e voltam independentemente do tratamento.
A pessoa pode passar dois ou três anos apresentando leves sintomas sensitivos, pequenas turvações da visão ou pequenas alterações no controle da urina sem dar importância a esses sinais, porque, depois de alguns dias, eles desaparecem. Com a evolução do quadro, aparecem sintomas sensitivos, motores e cerebelares de maior magnitude, representados por fraqueza, entorpecimento ou formigamento nas pernas, ou de um lado do corpo, diplopia (visão dupla) ou perda visual prolongada, desequilíbrio, tremor e descontrole dos esfíncteres.
Tratamento da esclerose múltipla
Uma vez confirmado o diagnóstico, o tratamento tem dois objetivos principais abreviar a fase aguda e tentar aumentar o intervalo entre um surto e outro. No primeiro caso, os corticosteroides são drogas úteis para reduzir a intensidade dos surtos. No segundo, imunossupressores e imunomoduladores ajudam a espaçar os episódios de recorrência e o impacto negativo que provocam na vida dos portadores de esclerose múltipla, já que é quase impossível eliminá-los com os tratamentos atuais.
Recomendações:
Embora não altere a evolução da doença, é importante manter a prática de exercícios físicos, pois eles podem fortalecer os ossos, melhorar o humor, ajudar no controle do peso e contra sintomas como a fadiga;
Quando os movimentos estão comprometidos, a fisioterapia ajuda a reformular o ato motor, dando ênfase à contração dos músculos ainda preservados;
O tratamento fisioterápico associado a determinados remédios ajuda também a reeducar o controle dos esfíncteres;
Nas crises agudas da doença, é aconselhável o paciente permanecer em repouso.

Algumas críticas mais que frequentes sobre os filmes da Marvel falam do visual chapado, vilões pouco elaborados e personagens femininas mal desenvolvidas. O mais novo capítulo da saga de heróis, Thor: Amor e Trovão faz de tudo para se afastar dessas tradições e, quando se fala de estética, vilão e heroína, o novo filme de Taika Waititi só acerta. É uma pena, no entanto, que ele tenha feito essa escolha de modo tão desequilibrado.
É um movimento que faz bastante sentido, não apenas por estar alinhado ao momento atual do MCU - um que busca, a cada nova produção, corrigir algum erro do seu passado -, mas por completar uma viagem que começou em Thor: Ragnarok e deu tão certo. Citado frequentemente como uma das melhores obras da Casa das Ideias, Ragnarok trouxe luz e cor para o Marvel Studios, um esforço
mais autoral, uma boa vilã e a promessa de uma figura feminina muito mais interessante ao universo, na introdução da Valquíria de Tessa Thompson. E enquanto Amor e Trovão pretende levar isso adiante, seu tropeço está em carecer de algo tão importante que caminhava lado a lado ao humor característico de Waititi em seu predecessor: um bom desenvolvimento de trama.
Não é que o novo filme do Deus do Trovão não tenha uma boa história em mãos: é uma ótima premissa o retorno de Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) como a Poderosa Thor, persona que salva (temporariamente) a cientista de seu já avançado câncer, para ajudar Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Korg (Waititi) e Valquíria a eliminar Gorr (Christian Bale) e sua ameaça de assassinar todos os deuses. E
não é nem que Amor e Trovão deslize no estabelecimento dessa ideia. Acontece que, aqui, há pouco interesse em contar uma história. A ordem de acontecimentos é tão acelerada, e tão mais apoiada em humor, música e estética, que a empreitada de Waititi deixa para trás a complexidade de seus personagens, resultando em uma falta de força emocional para todos os arcos - mas principalmente o do próprio protagonista.
É como se Waititi se apoiasse no admirável talento humorístico de Hemsworth e esquecesse que uma história é muito mais legal de acompanhar quando o nosso protagonista demonstra fragilidades reais. E enquanto existe sim um esforço de fazer de Thor um ser mais vulnerável, Amor e Trovão não foge da tradição do MCU de distrair qualquer emoção real com humor, algo que, no contexto de uma comédia assumida, pelo menos faz sentido. Mas a faceta sensível do Deus do Trovão já havia tomado centro em seu envolvimento com os Guardiões da Galáxia, e não é nenhuma novidade. O arco do herói em Amor e Trovão não sai dos mesmos ensinamentos que ele mesmo já havia adquirido ao lado de Peter Quill - que, aliás, aparece aqui ao lado de seus companheiros de modo bizarramente deslocado, em uma sequência inicial que parece ter sido filmada em outro estúdio e outra época.
A carga emocional do filme, portanto, recai sobre os ombros de Natalie Portman e sua nova Jane Foster, cujo arco de batalha contra o câncer e a busca de uma salvação temporária que a distrai de sua condição teria tudo para entregar ao MCU um peso humano que ele mesmo não vê, talvez, desde Pantera Negra. Mas enquanto Jane usa as forças do Mjölnir para esquecer de sua própria realidade, Amor e Trovão faz o mesmo, porque encontra dificuldade em equilibrar uma trama tão séria e real a um contexto tão fanfarrão.
Mas quando ele engata na viagem de Thor, Jane, Korg e Valquíria, Amor e Trovão funciona por suas piadas e serve bem como comédia romântica, uma repleta de boas escolhas de atuação. Christian Bale é abençoado com um bom papel vilanesco e realmente cria algo mais assustador que o comum para o estúdio (mesmo para o universo que recebeu tanto crédito por “entrar no terror” em Doutor Estranho 2); e os poucos relances de uma amizade entre Jane e Valquíria são bem carismáticos. O reencontro de Thor e Jane, no entanto, é um que acaba sacrificado pelo insistente humor, que não para sentir o peso que a reunião poderia ter.
É uma decisão consciente que, por outro lado, também sabe trabalhar suas forças onde quer depositá-las. A seleção de músicas de Amor e Trovão é empolgante e harmoniosa e, combinada ao visual colorido e dourado da produção, existe muito para distrair o espectador da falta de foco narrativo. Mesmo quando guarda o arco-íris em seu terceiro ato para navegar em um território super sombrio, o visual aqui nunca cai nos vacilos tradicionais do MCU, e entrega um espetáculo bonito de ver.
Em uma obra que pretende, em primeiro lugar, divertir e fazer rir, é curioso quanto tudo isso é ancorado exclusivamente no próprio Taika Waititi. E não porque Amor e Trovão usa a direção de modo humorístico, mas porque a maioria das piadas do filme são faladas, e saem da boca de Korg, personagem do diretor. É difícil não o entender como egocêntrico, colocando-se em posições de narrador e principal alívio cômico em um filme em que humor é tão importante. Mas o recurso funciona e Amor e Trovão é sim uma comédia que compensa.
Fato é que o quarto filme solo de Thor parece uma produção com déficit de atenção, desinteressado em prolongar conversas reais e raramente escolhendo respirar para deixar seus acontecimentos durarem mais que meros segundos. É uma pena, porque ver o Marvel Studios entregar um filme com menos de duas horas deveria ser um alívio. No fim das contas, a duração acaba longa demais para um filme que não quer investir na trama, e curto demais para uma história que envolve reencontros, câncer e assassinato de deuses.
Tudo isso só chama tanta atenção porque Waititi fez tão bem sua primeira empreitada no Marvel Studios, e porque Amor e Trovão acerta em cheio em tantos aspectos. Mas ao vir na sequência de Doutor Estranho 2, que já havia introduzido uma estética surpreendentemente bonita para o MCU, Thor: Amor e Trovão acaba assombrado por seu antecessor e pelos acertos de seu próprio diretor em Ragnarok. A ideia de entregar um filme exagerado e brega como o melhor do hard rock dos anos 80 é ótima - é uma pena que ele tenha deixado de lado o tão importante melodrama, que fez do gênero tão único até hoje.

Some more than frequent reviews of Marvel films talk about the standard look, poorly elaborated villains and underdeveloped female characters. The newest chapter in the heroes' saga, Thor: Love and Thunder does everything to get away from these traditions, and when it comes to aesthetics, villain and heroine, the new Taika Waititi movie is perfect. It is a pity, however, that it has made such an unbalanced choice.
It is a movement that makes a lot of sense, not only because it is aligned with the current moment of the MCU – one that seeks, with each new production, to correct some mistake of its past -, but for completing a journey that started in Thor: Ragnarök and worked so well. Quoted frequently as one of the best works of the House of Ideas, Ragnarök brought light and color to Marvel Studios, a more authorial effort, a good villain and the promise of a much more interesting female figure to the universe, in the introduction of Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie. And while Love and Thunder intends to carry this forward, its stumbling is in the lack of something so important that it walked side by side with Waititi's characteristic humor in its predecessor: a good plot development.
It's not that the new Thunder God movie doesn't have a good story in hand: it's a great premise Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) returns as the Mighty Thor, a persona who saves (temporarily) the scientist from her already advanced cancer, to help Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Korg (Waititi) and Valkyrie eliminate Gorr (Christian Bale) and his threat to assassinate all the gods. And it is not even that Love and Thunder slips in the establishment of this idea. It turns out there's little interest in telling a story here. The order of events is so accelerated, and so much more supported by humor, music and aesthetics, that Waititi's endeavor leaves behind the complexity of his characters, resulting in a lack of emotional strength for all arcs – but mainly that of the protagonist himself.
It's like Waititi leaned on Hemsworth's admirable humorous talent and forgot that a story is so much cooler to follow when our protagonist demonstrates real weaknesses. And while there is an effort to make Thor a more vulnerable being, Love and Thunder doesn't run away from the MCU tradition of distracting any real emotion with humor, something that, in the context of an assumed comedy, at least makes sense. But the Thunder God's sensitive facet had already taken center stage in his involvement with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and it's nothing new. The hero's arc in Love and Thunder remains on the same teachings that he himself had already acquired alongside Peter Quill – who, incidentally, appears here next to his companions in a bizarrely displaced way, in an initial sequence that seems to have been filmed in another studio and another time.
The film's emotional burden, therefore, rests on the shoulders of Natalie Portman and her new Jane Foster, whose battle arc against cancer and the search for temporary salvation that distracts her from her condition would have everything to deliver the human weight that this universe hasn't seen, perhaps, since Black Panther. But while Jane uses Mjölnir's forces to forget her own reality, Love and Thunder does the same, because it faces difficulties to balance such a serious and real plot with such a braggart context.
But when the movie gets started Thor, Jane, Korg and Valkyrie's trip, Love and Thunder works for its jokes and serves well as a romantic comedy, one filled with good acting choices. Christian Bale is blessed with a good villainous role and actually creates something scarier than usual for the studio (even for the universe that received so much credit for “going into terror” in Doctor Strange 2); and the few glimpses of a friendship between Jane and Valkyrie are quite charismatic. The reunion of Thor and Jane, however, is one that ends up sacrificed by the insistent humor, which doesn't stop to feel the weight that the meeting could have.
It is a conscious decision that, on the other hand, also knows how to work its forces where it wants to deposit them. The selection of Love and Thunder songs is exciting and harmonious and, combined with the colorful and golden look of the production, there is a lot to distract the viewer from the lack of narrative focus. Even when guarding the rainbow in its third act to navigate in a super dark territory, the look here never falls on the traditional MCU flinches, and delivers a beautiful spectacle to see.
In a work that aims, in the first place, to amuse and make you laugh, it is curious how all this is anchored exclusively in Taika Waititi itself. And not because Love and Thunder uses the direction in a humorous way, but because most of the jokes in the film are spoken, and come out of the mouth of Korg, the director's character. It is hard not to understand him as self-centered, putting himself in the position of narrator and main comedic relief in a film in which humor is so important. But the feature works and Love and Thunder is, in fact, a comedy that pays off.
The fact is that Thor's fourth solo film looks like an attention-deficit production, uninterested in prolonging real conversations and rarely choosing to breathe to let its events last longer than mere seconds. That's a pity because seeing Marvel Studios deliver a movie that's less than two hours should be a relief. At the end of the day, the duration ends too long for a film that doesn't want to invest in the plot, and too short for a story that involves reunions, cancer, and the murder of gods.
All this only draws so much attention because Waititi did so well in his first endeavor at Marvel Studios and because Love and Thunder hits the nail on so many aspects. But coming on the heels of Doctor Strange 2, which had already introduced a surprisingly beautiful aesthetic to the MCU, Thor: Love and Thunder ends up haunted by its predecessor and the successes of its own director in Thor Ragnarök. The idea of handing over an exaggerated and cheesy movie as the best hard rock of the 1980s is great – it's a pity that it has set aside the so important melodrama, which has made the genre so unique to these days.
