I also saw this in yesterday's paper and howled with laughter. I especially liked the "Mrs. Harvey" one - and it is supposed to be English written by someone mother tongue.... However, I'm still trying to figure out what the original French of the one below must have been. I suspect the "geysers" = gésiers (gizzards) but I still haven't worked out what the "plugs" were... Just a quick note to the North Americans: a U.S. edition of Croker's entertaining book (referenced in the article cited) is being published next year. It has been retitled "Twisted English" for the American market, presumably to avoid confusion with the movie "Lost in Translation."

I was over at my mother's house this evening admiring her new vase. I picked it up to look at the base to see if there was any identification of the manufacturer. This is the translation that was on the base "Put food in, Poison Food". | |
