Catalan term

capacitat docent etc

Catalan to English Other Government / Politics
Capacitat docent i investigadora: El professorat contracta gaudeix de plena capacitat docent i si està en possessió del títol de doctor, de plena capacitat investigadora.

Translated literally as 'capacity' just doesn't mean anything to me.

Contracted instructors shall be accorded full teaching capacity and, in the case of holders of doctorate degrees, full research capacity.

Capacity refers, to my mind, more to 'skills' that these individuals may have, whereas here the ideaof 'capacitat' seems to be that the individuals will have the right to fully exploit their teaching/reserach capacities, in the sense that no restrictions or limitations will be placed on them.

Would you agree with this interpretation?

Discussion

Timothy Barton Dec 28, 2004:
Should it say "contractat" o "amb contracte"? If you ask me they spent too much effort trying too be PC with the "professorat" and forgot about writing a coherent sentence!
Timothy Barton Dec 28, 2004:
I fail to see the function of the word "contracta". Is it a verb? In which case, why are there two conjugated verbs together? In the dictionary it is only listed as a noun. But two nouns together here doesn't seem to make sense.
Non-ProZ.com Dec 27, 2004:
ERquivalent text from th Spanish law: Los Catedrticos y Profesores Titulares de Universidad tendrn plena capacidad docente e investigadora. Los Catedrticos y Profesores Titulares de Escuelas Universitarias tendrn plena capacidad docente y, cuando se hallen en posesin del ttulo de Doctor, tambin plena capacidad investigadora.

Not much additional help, but I think it's open to two equally likely interpretations - see Marian's answer....

excellent teaching skills

are you sure they're not saying that instructors shall have excellent teaching skills and if they're PhDs they shall have excellent research skills?????

now that you\'ve posted the Spanish, I\'m even more confident that this is what they\'re saying. Pretty sure you\'re dealing with the requirements for hiring professors or at least the qualifications for professors.
Peer comment(s):

agree Berni Armstrong : should have excellent teaching skills and should be able to demonstrate research skills... that's how I read this too.

a full teaching capacity

I agree with your interpretation. It's just that I have no problem with using 'capacity' in the sense intended here. But perhaps it's clearer with the article.

shall be authorised to act as instructors without restriction, etc

I agree with your interpretation, perhaps this alternative wording is one way to avoid using "capacity" in this way (though "capacity" doesn't srike me as unintelligible either).
