4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: ""summer associate" is the term of art here (and not internship, for complicated reasons, pertaining specifically to law firms) "

inhouse summer law-student clerkship (summer months' mini-pupillage in barrister's chambers)

Neither strictly a full legal apprenticeship, nor traineeship.

Mini-pupillage in Chambers: unusual in the summer, as the Inns of Court (mediaeval Colleges of Lawyers) close down the whole of August.

Solicitors may take on law students as law clerks as trainees, but the latter engagement is not usually confined to the summer.

Locum usually connotes a qualified Solicitor in a firm of Solicitors and filling in when members of staff are away on holiday or during maternity /paternity leave.

Locums are unusual in Barrister's Chambers as other members of the set will step in when asked to do so by the (qualified) Chamber's Clerk or (usually unqualifed) Practice Manager or the breif will go elsewhere.

take on law students as law clerks *and* trainees
Example sentence:

A mini pupillage is a short work experience placement that involves shadowing a barrister, possibly with the option of attending hearings in court. The length of a mini pupillage can vary from one day to two weeks.

USA: Our *summer program and trainee program* give an immersive experience.

excellent answer, and thanks for all the details and suggestions. (however too many words)

neutral AllegroTrans : For somebody who has spent many years in continental Europe I never cease to be amazed at how Anglocentric some of your answers are (Inns of Court, solicitors and barristers - in Sweden?)

summer law clerk

The Domstolsordlista has notarie as law clerk, so that's what Id suggest. I find your term listed for Swedish law firms, and my suggestion for UK firms. These look like real jobs, and not internships.
Note from asker:
Yes, I agree that "summer law clerk" is the most accurate term here - especially as notarie is a "law clerk". However to avoid confusion (though disregarding what the client has written in their document), and even though "summer law clerk" is a commonly used term in the UK, I will go with "summer associate" (not internship).
Peer comment(s):

agree Agneta Pallinder : Even "summer law clerk position". A temporary job as a law clerk to cover the period when courts are short staffed due to summer holidays.

Thanks, Agneta! Position works well, too.
