think about it Apr 10, 2010

But yes, if following the forum, he seems to have been quite much loved, almost personally somehow. I'm surprised a bit, but that's how it looks like. Large family or a very fomal codex.

It's not like that. He was unpopular, especially among educated people. Who cares though? He was a democratic president, for better or worse, ridiculed and criticized or not — doesn't matter. When Hitler or Stalin died, it was a sigh of relief; anybody else, it's a tragic and saddening event.

In any case, there isn't that much focus on the President. There were 15 Members of Parliament on that plane, including three Deputy Speakers, five most important generals in the country, National Bank president, etc.

R.I.P.

Krzysztof is absolutely right Apr 10, 2010

When a person is beheaded, you don't ask if he was stupid or intelligent, you don't modify your reaction depending whether you liked the person or not - you just oppose the very concept of beheading anyone.
Our country was as good as beheaded. Unlike the case of an individual, a replacement is possible. But getting any replacement fully functional is always a long process, and full of anxiety...

Thank God our PM

Thank God our PM and Cabinet ministers weren't on the same plane... we need some intact institutions now, badly.

It doesn’t matter now if we loved our President or not. He and his wife died in a tragic catastrophe, together with other ca. 90 persons. It’s a human tragedy. Don’t you think so?

I was not aware that the Magdalena posted the message because she thought it was merely a human tragedy. I had the distinct impression she posted because she felt it was a political tragedy, otherwise why mention the president (who is, after all, no more important as a human being than any of the other 95 pepole who died).

“shell-shocked (adjective) - shocked, confused or anxious because of a difficult situation, and unable to think or act normally” -- according to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary

Thanks, I was not aware that the term's figurative meaning has made it into the dictionaries (the meaning is still the same as or very similar to the one I quoted in my first post, though). I don't think that this is what Magdalena meant, however -- I thought she simply meant that she was very shocked (and not so shocked that she is unable to act normally).

Two people responded to my post and implied that the president's death is not seen as a blessing by anyone precisely because he was democratically elected and because he was not a dictator. I must say that it is interesting to note that some cultures believe that anyone who is democratically elected and not a dictator would always be well-loved and not resented to the point of being glad or relieved as his demise. Still, I apologise if my comment cause offence. Look at my profile page to see where I'm from.

The whole nation is unable to act normally today. And that's precisely what Magdalena meant - we DO feel shell-shocked.

Whatever our political sympathies, a half of our political landscape is gone. What does it matter which part is gone? Imagine that in your country half of the top politicians are wiped out, be it the government or the opposition - there's going to be a tremendous change in landscape, and you need time to get accustomed to it.

We've also lost absolutely ALL the top military - where's politics in THAT?

very sad Apr 10, 2010

and unfair...

I do not know if I have the right to say it in a proZ.com forum thread, cause sometimes posts are simply removed here, but it does not look like a simple accident to me and i am familiar with Polish history. To many coincidences...

I simply respect the choice of the majority even though I know all too well that it is not true that majority is always right.
Again, it was not only the president who died. I am also really moved by the way the Russian officials reacted.

thanks for condolences Apr 10, 2010

Replying to some questions: yes, our President may have been controversial, some agreed with him more, some others less, but that's normal in democracy and he was democratically elected. It's really not the best time to remember the controversies, now let's try to put all the differences aside, that's what we now need the most.

Thanks to all our colleagues from abroad for condolences.

About security for ex-Polish President? Apr 10, 2010

Hello,

It is sad news, I have to agree.

However, I still wonder: There were very important Polish officials on this plane (the Polish army chief I read earlier?). Why did they all have to go on the same plane?
