The best way of approaching quality of life measurement is to measure the extent to which people's 'happiness requirements' are met - ie those requirements which are a necessary (although not sufficient) condition of anyone's happiness - those 'without which no member of the human race can be happy.'

WHAT IS QOL? QOL may be defined as subjective well-being. Recognising the subjectivity of QOL is a key to understanding this construct. QOL reflects the difference, the gap, between the hopes and expectations of a person and their present experience. Human adaptation is such that life expectations are usually adjusted so as to lie within the realm of what the individual perceives to be possible. This enables people who have difficult life circumstances to maintain a reasonable QOL.

Quality of Life is tied to perception of 'meaning'. The quest for meaning is central to the human condition, and we are brought in touch with a sense of meaning when we reflect on that which we have created, loved, believed in or left as a legacy.

Our definition of quality of life is: The degree to which a person enjoys the important possibilities of his/her life. Possibilities result from the opportunities and limitations each person has in his/her life and reflect the interaction of personal and environmental factors. Enjoyment has two components: the experience of satisfaction and the possession or achievement of some characteristic, as illustrated by the expression: "She enjoys good health." Three major life domains are identified: Being, Belonging, and Becoming. The conceptualization of Being, Belonging, and Becoming as the domains of quality of life were developed from the insights of various writers.

(Hermes) is a pension fund manager based in London. It is owned by, and is the principal fund manager for, the BT Pension Scheme, which is the UK’s largest. Hermes also manages portfolios for the Royal Mail Pension Plan and over 200 other major pension schemes. Total funds under Hermes’ management are approximately Ј62 billion (December 2005). As part of its Equity Ownership Service (“EOS”), Hermes also advises clients on corporate governance matters in respect of a further Ј9 billion of equities (December 2005).
The fact that Hermes is ultimately owned by a large pension fund, with a great number of individual beneficiaries, and is thus independent of any broader financial services group, allows it to pursue a unique investment management approach. In particular, and in line with the needs of other long-term investors, Hermes is in a position to adopt a long-term strategy
regarding its investments which facilitates a credible dialogue with investee companies.
Hermes’ approach to engagement with investee companies, which we refer to as stewardship, is based on the fundamental belief that companies with active, interested and involved shareholders are more likely to achieve superior long-term returns than those without. In short, we believe that good stewardship creates value. Hermes thus places great emphasis on engagement with all companies in which it invests and has been a leader in promoting better corporate governance for over a decade.
The Hermes Corporate Governance Principles (HCGP) set out in this document form the basis for our engagement with the companies in which we or our clients invest. They explain the concepts underlying our stewardship approach and describe what we expect from investee companies in terms of corporate governance. As such, the HCGP give an indication what the companies we or our clients invest in can expect from us in terms of engagement whether through general communications or voting at general meetings.
The HCGP are split into two parts, the Global Principles and the Regional Principles. The former are based on the Statement on Global Corporate Governance Principles issued by the International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN) in 1999 and revised in 2005. This statement effectively represents the ICGN’s interpretation of the OECD Principles of Corporate Governance published in 1998 and revised in 2004, but amplifies certain aspects of them. The Global Principles also draw on and to some extent make reference to UK corporate governance guidance that we support. Our
Global Principles are set out in this document.

One of the most difficult jobs facing the business appraiser is that of selecting the appropriate rate at which to capitalize earnings. The task can be difficult even when a reasonable group of comparable public companies can be developed. However, in the more frequent case for most appraisers, the public comparable search turns up no usable comparable companies, and the difficulty is magnified.
This article will attempt to clarify some of the options available to appraisers in developing capitalization factors in both situations. After laying some groundwork, we will focus first on the more general case where there are no public comparables, and then extend the methodology for use when a public comparable group exists.
Early Applications of the Capital Asset Pricing Model to the Question of Capitalization Rates
James H. Schilt, ASA, CFA. wrote a helpful article several years ago which has been referenced by many appraisers. The article suggested "building" a capitalization factor by adding together an element representing the opportunity cost of investing in a subject company (Schilt suggested using the 20-year U.S. Treasury Bond as a proxy) and a subjectively derived risk premium.
Schilt provided a table which provided assistance in selecting the appropriate level of risk premium for five categories of closely-held companies. His capitalization was the sum of the opportunity cost proxy and the selected risk premium. Schilt suggested that the capitalization rate be used with pre-tax earnings in order to derive a value for a particular enterprise. In our experience, the Schilt method was very useful for smaller companies, but became less applicable as the size of the subject enterprise increased.
