Source text - English This had been the government mansion in the days of the Old Empire. Costs had been of less importance then. It had been before the Harkonnens and their new megalopolis of Carthag -- a cheap and brassy place some two hundred kilometers northeast across the Broken Land. Leto had been wise to choose this place for his seat of government. The name, Arrakeen, had a good sound, filled with tradition. And this was a smaller city, easier to sterilize and defend.
Again there came the clatter of boxes being unloaded in the entry. Jessica sighed.
Against a carton to her right stood the painting of the Duke's father. Wrapping twine hung from it like a frayed decoration. A piece of the twine was still clutched in Jessica's left hand. Beside the painting lay a black bull's head mounted on a polished board. The head was a dark island in a sea of wadded paper. Its plaque lay flat on the floor, and the bull's shiny muzzle pointed at the ceiling as though the beast were ready to bellow a challenge into this echoing room.
Jessica wondered what compulsion had brought her to uncover those two things first -- the head and the painting. She knew there was something symbolic in the action. Not since the day when the Duke's buyers had taken her from the school had she felt this frightened and unsure of herself.

They heightened her feelings of confusion. She shuddered, glanced at the slit windows high overhead. It was still early afternoon here, and in these latitudes the sky looked black and cold -- so much darker than the warm blue of Caladan. A pang of homesickness throbbed through her.
So far away, Caladan.
"Here we are!"
The voice was Duke Leto's.
She whirled, saw him striding from the arched passage to the dining hall. His black working uniform with red armorial hawk crest at the breast looked dusty and rumpled.
"I thought you might have lost yourself in this hideous place," he said.
"It is a cold house," she said. She looked at his tallness, at the dark skin that made her think of olive groves and golden sun on blue waters. There was woodsmoke in the gray of his eyes, but the face was predatory: thin, full of sharp angles and planes.

Isto acontecera antes dos Harkonnen e a sua nova megalopólis de Cartago – um sítio vulgar e pretensioso a cerca de duzentos quilómetros para o nordeste, atravessando a Terra Quebrada. Leto fora sábio em escolher este sítio para a sua base de governo. O nome Arrakeen soava bem, carregado de tradição. E esta era uma cidade mais pequena, mais fácil de esterilizar e defender.
Novamente, soou o ruído de caixotes a serem descarregados à entrada. Jessica suspirou.
Encostada a uma caixa de cartão à sua direita, estava a pintura do pai do Duque. O papel de embrulho pendia dela, como uma franja decorativa. Um pedaço do fio ainda jazia, apertado, na mão esquerda de Jessica. Ao lado da pintura, jazia a cabeça de um boi negro, fixa numa tábua polida. A cabeça era uma ilha escura num mar de papel enchumaçado. A sua placa jazia no chão, e o focinho polido do boi erguia-se para o tecto acima como se o animal estivesse pronto para bramar um desafio pela reverberência da sala.
Jessica meditou sobre a natureza do impulso que a levara a desempacotar essas duas coisas primeiro: a cabeça e a pintura. Ela sabia que havia algo simbólico na acção. Desde o dia em que os representantes do Duque a haviam levado da escola que ela não se sentia tão assustada e insegura de si mesma.

Elas aumentaram os seus sentimentos de confusão. Ela estremeceu, e olhou para as pequenas janelas muito acima da sua cabeça. Ainda era cedo na tarde, e nestas latitudes o céu parecia negro e frio – muito mais escuro do que o azul quente de Caladan. Um assomo doloroso de saudades do seu lar perpassou por ela.
Tão longe, Caladan.
- Aqui estamos nós!
A voz pertencia ao Duque Leto.
Ela girou sobre si, vendo-o a avançar da passagem arqueada para o salão de jantar. O seu uniforme negro de trabalho, com o brasão de armas do falcão vermelho ao peito, parecia poeirento e enrugado.
- Pensei que talvez te tivesses perdido neste lugar odioso – disse ele.
- É uma casa fria – disse ela. Ela observou a sua altura, a pele escurecida que a lembrava de olivais e o sol dourado sobre águas azuladas. Havia fumaça de madeira no cinzento dos seus olhos, mas a cara era predatória: magra, cheia de ângulos agudos e planos.
