You’ll feel it the moment you step into the state – like an invisible natural electricity that makes the animals go crazy before a summer storm, the Louisiana air is charged. This is a state where gators lurk in swamps, where a blue-eyed, black-skinned Creoles dip fishing poles into the lazy river, where French-speaking Acadians strap washboards to their chests and strum the distinctive clicking sound of zydeco; a place where a lone sax player can fill a morning, redefine a day. It’s where clashing cultures share few traits except a seemingly undeniable urge to eat well and dance dance dance.
In the rolling hills and pine forests of northern Louisiana, the mostly Protestant population shares similar traits with other Southern states. But the world becomes a different place amid the swampy, gator-infested bayous of southern Louisiana, where Creole and Cajun flavors tempt even the tame. All this centers on New Orleans, where jazz and Afro-Caribbean sounds color the thick sultry air with so much history and invincibility, you just can’t resist the beautiful urge to let loose.
History
The lower Mississippi River area was dominated by the Mississippian Mound Building culture until around AD 1592 when Europeans arrived and disposed the Indians with the usual combination of disease, unfavorable treaties and outright hostility. The land was passed back and forth from the Spanish to the French, to the British and back to the French. After the American revolution and some colonial double-dealing, the whole area passed to the USA in the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, and Louisiana became a state in 1812.
Steamboats plying the river system opened a vital trade network across the continent. New Orleans became a major port, and Louisiana’s slave-based plantation economy kept a flowing export of rice, livestock, tobacco, indigo, sugarcane and especially cotton. Alarmed by Abraham Lincoln’s election as president, Louisiana seceded from the Union and was an independent republic for about two months before joining the Confederacy. Union forces seized control of New Orleans in 1862, occupying much of the state during the war. Some 24,000 Louisiana blacks joined Union forces, though quite a few ‘free people of color’ volunteered to fight for the Confederacy.
Louisiana was readmitted to the Union in 1868, after a new state constitution granted suffrage to blacks. The next 30 years saw political wrangling and economic stagnation, and in 1898 most blacks were effectively disenfranchised by the imposition of literacy tests and other impediments. In the early 20th century oil discovery gave the economy a boost, while the devastation of cotton crops by boll weevils forced some agricultural diversification. From the 1920s, autocratic governor Huey Long was able to modernize much of the state’s infrastructure. Industry developed further after WWII. Tourism cashed in on the state’s cultural heritage, but the tradition of unorthodox, volatile and sometimes ruthless politics continues today. Race and economics are longoing sources of struggle – Louisiana has the second-highest per capita poverty rate in the US.
