Source text - English This research suggests a methodology for the product development process in an automotive company, aiming at the correct systematic approach of Value Engineering (VE) and target-costing in cost management. VE and target-costing are complementary processes, because while one allows the identification of where cost reduction could be achieved, the other shows the target to be achieved to guarantee the long-term profitability plan of a company. In order to do that, work plans were developed, with the application of the VE methodology at three subsequent stages: concept, project and validation. This proposed approach was validated in a case study focused on the engine-starter system of a vehicle, aiming at improved product cost, functionality and quality accomplishment, in accordance with customer needs and the company strategy.
Translation - Italian Questa ricerca suggerisce una metodologia per il processo di sviluppo dei prodotti di un’impresa specializzata in automezzi, mirata a sviluppare, nell’ambito della gestione dei costi, un corretto approccio sistematico al Value Engineering (VE) e al target-costing.
Il VE e il target-costing sono due processi complementari, poiché uno permette l’identificazione delle aree in cui è possibile ridurre i costi, mentre l’altro indica qual è l’obiettivo da raggiungere per garantire la realizzazione dei programmi di redditività a lungo termine dell’impresa.
A questo scopo, sono stati sviluppati dei piani di lavoro, applicando la metodologia VE in tre fasi successive: concept, progetto e convalida. La validità di questo approccio è stata dimostrata tramite l'applicazione pratica, in una situazione il cui obiettivo era ottenere dei miglioramenti in termini di costo, funzionalità e qualità del sistema di avviamento di un veicolo, conformemente ai bisogni della clientela e alla strategia dell’impresa.

Source text - English Finn-Power Italia produces automated machines for sheet metal bending, which it sells in more than 60,000 configurations, obtained by combining several options. Furthermore, designers often modify the product. Bending machines can produce very different products, from baking ovens to panels for ventilation systems for cruise ships. We developed and implemented a method of using planning bills and product modularity to deal with high product variety and frequent modifications. Planning bills are an artificial grouping of components used to simplify forecasting and material planning. The method develops (1) decision-support models that simultaneously translate sales specifications for new or changed options into product documentation, and engineering changes into saleable options; and (2) planning bills that need not be fully revised as products change.
