English to Indonesian: What’s Up with Missions General field: Other Detailed field: Religion
Source text - English John never was commissioned by the church. You don’t read anything about that. He just tagged along. I’ll tell you what, if you’re going to tag along someplace, don’t tag along with a bunch of missionaries who have been called by God unless you’re serious. They got out there, and John Mark said, “Whoa. I’m not going to do this.”
[Music: Worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness. Tremble before Him all the earth]
From San Diego, California, welcome to Turning Point with Dr. David Jeremiah.
In today’s message, What’s Up with Missions? Dr. Jeremiah talks about God’s heart for the world. Discover what the thirteenth chapter of Acts reveals about the purpose and priority of missions next on today’s edition of Turning Point.
[Music: Sing to the Lord all the earth]
Hello. I’m David Jeremiah. Next on Turning Point, we’re going to study a pivotal chapter in the book of Acts. In Acts chapter 13, the spotlight is moving from the church in Jerusalem to Antioch, from home missions to world missions. What does this transition have to teach us about the purpose of missions today? I trust you’ll be encouraged to seek God’s heart for the world in today’s message entitled “What’s Up with Missions?” next here on Turning Point.
If you study church history, you will discover that there have been many, what we might call today, famous prayer meetings. For instance, on August 13, 1727, there was a prayer meeting that has become known as the Moravian prayer meeting, a prayer meeting that started and lasted for a hundred years. In fact, during the first twenty-five years of that prayer meeting, the Lord called out to Himself more than one hundred missionaries to serve around the world.
Then there is another prayer meeting that is sometimes called the noonday prayer meeting which Mr. Lamphier called in the lecture room of the old Dutch church on Fulton Street in New York City. It was September 23, 1857. Out of this prayer meeting grew the widespread revival of the following years.
But there have been very few prayer meetings that can rival the importance of the prayer meeting that took place in Antioch in about 46 or 47 AD when five men met together to pray, and world missions was born.
The story of that prayer meeting is told in the thirteenth chapter of the book of Acts, and I need to tell you that the thirteenth chapter of the book of Acts is a watershed chapter. Here the spotlight moves away from Jerusalem, and it centers on Antioch. Here in the thirteenth chapter we move away from Peter being the star of the stories to Paul being the star of all the stories
