Deany Soemali is a native speaker of English, Indonesian and Javanese. She currently works as an Indonesian/Javanese linguist, translating a variety of media from print to video into English, and has done so professionally for over 8 years. She also proofreads, edits and provides quality assurance on Indonesian translations and narrative products.
Deany's foray into the linguistic world was apparent from very early on. Since the ripe old age of 7, following her move from Melbourne to Indonesia, Deany has provided English translations to her new primary school friends for Indonesian words such as "tv" and "gelas" (tv and glass).
Upon her return to Australia nine years later, Deany won the Indonesian Award for the highest highschool exam results across the state of Victoria. Deany's indepth knowledge of Indonesian slang, colloquialism and culture had also enabled her to assist her brother in his courting of an Indonesian sweetheart (now wife).
Other noteworthy work include subtitling for Save The Children and acting as liaison to the Indonesian President Jokowi and family during the 2014 G20 Summit in Australia.
Always up for a challenge, Deany is currently working on an English translation for the beautiful new Italian novel Il Soffitto Giallo, by Andrea Nini.
