[What brought me to translation]
I had read 'Jack : Straight from the Gut' written by Jack Welch, ex-chairman of GE. I found one translated sentence sayig 'I used to play baseball at 'Fenway' park. However, there is a very famous baseball park named 'Fenway Park' at Boston, Massachusetts. That means Fenway Park is an unique name of a baseball park, not the name of an ordinary park. It was absolutely mistranslation and I could find that very easily.

In this way, I have accumulated lots of background knowledge while reading books, newspapers and magazines. Especially, I have really enjoyed making IT system manuals or training materials while I’m working with LG. Furthermore, I’m very organized and control myself to meet the deadline at all time. With my outstanding writing skill and on-time delivery mind, it was natural for me to be interested in translation because translation was very dynamic and exciting when trying to understand authors’ intention with my strong background knowledge.

[Experiences]
1) During the career in Hyundai Merchant Marine
- Translating English / Japanese to Korean for 3.5 years to report ocean shipping market trend (Daily).
- Enhancement of translation capability regarding shipping, logistics, transportation and forwarding.

2) During the career in DHL Supply Chain
- Translating English to Korean for all of screens and field names to introduce new IT system
- The new system had been used for several years at Carrefour (current Homeplus) distribution center.

3) During the career in LG Electronics
- Translating Korean to English for 15 process manuals and about 100 screen manuals for ERP project.
- Professional translator made 'no correction' for my translations.
- Assurance in translation capability about IT (User-friendly manual in English)

- Translating Japanese to Korean for 6 books to make training material for LGE suppliers
- Translating Japanese to Korean regarding the latest business management trend
such as manufacturing, SCM, Industry 4.0, the 4th Industrial Revolution and Big Data.
- Enhancement of translation capability about production, manufacturing, SCM and
other latest business management trends.

[Future Plan]
After 7 years of experiences in translation works, I would like to show and develop my capability further in freelance translation market. I will establish my concrete positioning in tranlation market with my outputs, endless passion and exploration for new knowledge and observance for deadline. Actually, I have never broken deadline for 6 years while constributing a column in a monthly magazine.

Although my career is specialized in logistics, transportation, SCM, manufacturing and production, my long term goal is to translate about various fields of economics and business management with the help of my challenge toward new knowledge.



[번역을 하게 된 동기]
2001년, 잭 웰치 전 GE 회장의 저서 '잭, 끝없는 도전과 용기(Jack : Straight from the Gut)’를 읽다가 ‘팬웨이 공원’에서 야구를 하곤 했다는 번역문을 보았는데, 잭 웰치가 나고 자란 메사추세츠 주에는 팬웨이파크라는 야구장이 있는데 이것의 오역임을 발견했습니다. 평소 독서와 신문/잡지 열독, 박물관 관람을 즐기다 보니 다양한 분야에 많은 지식을 갖게 되었고, 작문에 자신이 있던 터라 번역에 관심을 갖게 되었습니다.

[번역 경험]
1) 현대상선 재직시
- 경영진에 세계 해운시장 동향을 일일 보고하기 위해 영문/일문 해운 자료 한글화 3.5년간 수행
- 해운, 물류, 운송, 포워딩 분야 문서에 대하여 품질 높은 번역 능력 배양

2) DHL Supply Chain 재직시
- 해외 IT 시스템의 메뉴와 필드명을 한글화해서 국내에 도입
- 이 때 도입한 시스템은 한국까르푸 (지금의 홈플러스) 이천물류센터에서 수년간 사용됨

3) LG전자 재직시
- 통합 ERP 프로젝트를 하면서 15개 국문 업무 매뉴얼을 영문화, 약 100여 개의 국문 화면 매뉴얼을 영문화
- 회사에서는 감수를 위해 통번역 전문가를 채용했는데, 제가 작성한 매뉴얼은 ‘거의 손볼 것이 없다’며 통과시켜 줌
- IT 분야에서 사용자 친화적인 쉽고 단순한 영문 매뉴얼을 작성할 수 있음을 확인

- ERP 프로젝트 종료 후 LG전자의 부품 협력업체 교육자료를 만들기 위해 약 200페이지 분량의 일본 책 6권을 한글화
- 생산관리와 공급망 관리, 인더스트리 4.0과 4차 산업 혁명, 빅 데이터 등 비교적 최신 트렌드 서적을 일한 번역
- 생산, 제조, 공급망 관리, 최신 경영 트렌드 관련 번역작업도 수행 가능

[향후 계획]
이렇게 약 7년간 번역 업무 경험을 하다 보니 이제는 직접 프리랜스 번역 시장에 들어가 실력을 발휘하고 또 발전시키고 싶었습니다. 지금까지의 성과들, 지식에 대한 끝없는 열정과 탐구, 그리고 약속은 반드시 지킨다는 신의를 가지고 번역 시장에서 저만의 영역을 구축하고 싶습니다. 실제 6년 동안 모 잡지에 저의 원고를 기고해 왔는데 지금까지 한 번도 납기를 어겨 본 적이 없습니다.

비록 물류, 운송, SCM, 제조, 생산 분야에 특화된 경력을 갖고 있지만, 새로운 지식을 얻는 일에 두려움이 없는 만큼 다양한 경제 경영 분야의 번역을 해 보고 싶다는 것이 제 꿈이자 비전입니다.
