Prof. Chris Dickman, a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science from the University of Sydney, estimated on 8 January 2020 that more than one billion animals were killed by bushfires in Australia; while more than 800 million animals perished in New South Wales. The estimate was based on a 2007 World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) report on impacts of land clearing on Australian wildlife in New South Wales that provided estimates of mammal, bird and reptile population density in the region. Dickman's calculation had been based on highly conservative estimates and the actual mortality would therefore be higher. The figure provided by Dickman included mammals (excluding bats), birds, and reptiles; and did not include frogs, insects, or other invertebrates. Other estimates, which include animals like bats, amphibians and invertebrates, also put the number killed at over a billion.
Ecologists feared some endangered species were driven to extinction by the fires. Though bushfires are not uncommon in Australia, they are usually of a lower scale and intensity that only affect small parts of the overall distribution of where species live. Animals that survived a bushfire could still find suitable habitats in the immediate vicinity, which was not the case when an entire distribution is decimated in an intense event. Besides immediate mortality from the fires, there were on-going mortalities after the fires from starvation, lack of shelter, and attacks from predators such as foxes and feral cats that are attracted to fire-affected areas to hunt. At least one species, the Kate's leaf-tailed gecko, had the entirety of its habitat burnt by the fires, while the long-footed potoroo had over 82% habitat burnt. While many endangered species managed to persist through the fires, albeit with severely impacted populations that will not survive in the long-term without major human influence, other species such as the Kangaroo Island micro-trapdoor spider and the Kangaroo Island assassin spider have not been sighted since.

황사는 호흡기질환을 유발할 수 있으며, 심하면 사망에 이르게 할 수도 있습니다. 황사 피해가 최소화될 수 있도록 가족, 교직원, 지역 주민과 대처합니다.
1.가정에서는
- 황사∙미세먼지가 실내로 들어오지 못하도록 창문 등을 점검하고 마스크를 준비합니다.
※이산화탄소 등 실내오염물질 저감을 위한 최소한의 환기 필요
- 노약자, 호흡기 질환자의 실외활동을 줄이고 외출할 때에는 마스크를 착용합니다.
※마스크 착용 시 불편할 경우 전문가에게 상담을 받고 마스크를 착용하지 않습니다.
-포장되지 않은 식품은 오염되지 않도록 위생용기 등에 넣습니다.
- 어린이는 실외활동을 줄이고 집에 빨리 갑니다.
- 외출 후에는 손과 발을 깨끗이 씻습니다.
- 황사∙미세먼지가 종료 후에는 충분히 환기를 하고 청소를 합니다.
- 황사∙미세먼지에 노출된 식품이나 물건은 충분히 씻어서 먹거나 사용합니다.

Yellow dust could cause respiratory diseases and may lead to death in the most severe case. Respond with your family members, faculties, and local residents to minimize the damage of yellow dust.
1. At Home
- Check your windows to prevent yellow dust or fine dust from coming into the house and prepare facial masks.
※ Circulate air for short period of time to minimize indoor pollutants such as cardon dioxide.
- Reduce outdoor activities of the old, the weak, and patients with a respiratory disease the elderly, people with respiratory diseases should reduce outdoor activities and wear a facial mask if they go out.
※If you feel uncomfortable wearing a facial mask, consult with experts and do not wear it.
- Put unpacked food into food containers to prevent contamination.
- Children should reduce outdoor activities and return to home as quickly as possible.
- Wash your hands and feet thoroughly when you return to home.
- Circulate air for enough time when yellow dust or fine dust has disappeared and clean your house.
- If your foods or goods have been exposed to yellow dust or fine dust, wash them enough before you eat or use them.
2. At Kindergarten, Day Care Centre, and/or School
- Check your emergency contact list for students and instruct behaviour response in case of yellow dust or fine dust.
3. At Rural Community
- Check entrances, exits and vents of all buildings including vinyl greenhouses, hothouses, and/or animal barns.
- If you are raising livestock in grazing lands, evacuate them to animal barns, and close all the entrances and exits of vinyl greenhouses, hothouses, and/or animal barns to prevent animals exposing to yellow dust.
