翻译文本 - English英语 On April 1, 2020, the Ministry of Justice approved the execution of death row prisoner Weng Renxian. This immediately led to calls from the European Union and international human rights organizations on Taiwan, a democratic country, to end the death penalty, surfacing again the debate around capital punishment. This debate has been ongoing in Taiwan for many years, and there is no room for compromise from either those pro- or con-camps, regardless of the opinion of government officials or the general public. The pro-abolitionists believe that human rights override everything else and that paying with life for killing another is not an effective deterrent to crime and may even result in wrongful punishment. On the other hand, those who support the death penalty believe that the severe punishment and enforcement of the law must be imposed and that senseless criminals who arbitrarily deprive others of their lives should not be tolerated.
