Source text - English בניין ג'נרל אלקטריק בעל הגג המחודד נראה כמו תוספת פרועה של הכנסייה. מוט דקיק מתנשא אל תוך עטרה סבוכה של ניצוצות אבסטרקטיים המסמלים את גלי הרדיו בהם השתמשו הבעלים הראשונים של המבנה, אר.סי.איי. הלובי (הכניסה היא מלקסינגטון 570) הוא עוד אוצר בסגנון "דקו".

Translation - Hebrew The spiky-topped General Electric building seems like a wild extension of the church, its slender shaft rises into a meshed crown of abstract sparks and lightning strokes that symbolizes the radio waves used by its original occupant, RCA. The lobby (the entrance is at 570 Lexington) is yet another Deco delight.
Amongst all this it's difficult at first to see the originality of the Seagram Building between 52nd and 53rd streets. Designed by Mies Van der Rohc with Philip Johnson and built in 1958, this was the seminal ‘curtain-wall’ skyscraper, the floors are supported internally, allowing for a smoky glass skin made of whisky-bronze metal (Seagram are distillers), now weathered into a dull black. In keeping with the era's vision, every detail of the interior, down to the fixtures and the lettering on the mailboxes is especially designed. This is a supreme example of Modernist reason, deceptively simple and cleverly detailed. Its opening caused a wave of approval. The plaza, an open forecourt designed to set the building apart from its neighbors and display it to its advantage, was such a success as a public space, that the city revised the zoning laws to encourage other high-rise builders to supply plazas. The result was the windswept anti-people places now found all over downtown and midtown Manhattan. A lot of pallid Mies copies; boxes that have alienated many from a "faceless" modern architecture.
Across Park Avenue Mckim, Mead and White's Racquet and Squash Club, seems like a classic addition to Seagram Plaza. More interesting is the Lever House across the way between 53rd and 54th. This is the building that set the Modernist ball rolling on Park Avenue in 1952. Then, the two right-angled slabs that form a steel and glass bookend seemed revolutionary compared to the traditional buildings that surrounded it. Nowadays it's overlooked and not a little dingy.
