French term

le chant sacré

French to English Other Music
This concept repeats a lot in this context. Please look at the examples.

Context:

sacred music OR sacred vocal music OR religious music

For a singer, it is usually not needed to specify "vocal" music - sacred is enough.

In English, "song" may imply non-classical music in the context of religious music.

agree celandine : sacred music

agree Charlie Bavington : religious sounds OK to me in this context. I can't visualise lay people talking about "sacred" music in this kind of interview in English.

It's a question of tone & context. "Religious" is certainly the everyday term, but "sacred" is the normal term in the context of "serious" music.
agree Patrice : agree that sacred is enough
34 mins
agree Can Altinbay : Actually, since these people actively do sing these things, they would use a term such as sacred.

agree suezen : sacred music

neutral writeaway : your refs are definitely closer to the cultural belly button. very convincing indeed. how would you translate 'la musique sacrée, la musique religieuse ?

;-)) Luckily, that's easy to translate - it's just difficult to figure out if the author is making a distinction between the two, or repeating themselves.
agree Angela Dickson (X) : these are viable options in this context

agree Gayle Wallimann : Sacred vocal music

sacred chant

At least, that's the term I hear.
Peer comment(s):

disagree David Vaughn : Sacred chant is usually something like Gregorian or Tibetan - as distinguished from more melodic singing.

church music

just another option for you, given it's highly likely that these good people started off singing in church choirs, by the sound of things.

However I will concede that this goes against my "better generally right than specifically wrong" rule, so perhaps "religious" might be safer.
Peer comment(s):

neutral David Vaughn : Church choirs are much less pervasive in France than in Anglo countries. But chorals are very popular. The fact that these people DO seem to be singing in a sacred music group does increase the likelyhood they have sung in church.

Fair point. I've only been to church once in France, and there wasn't a choir, now you mention it......:-)
agree RHELLER : yes, the music was written when people did go to church - this is not modern stuff

Peer comment(s):

neutral David Vaughn : "Songs" is seldom used to refer to religious classical music. Protestants will refer to hymns. I think "songs" gives the idea of foreign music. Note that your quote is a French translation from a small town that is not exactly the cultural "belly button".
1 hr
religious classical music? hymns are a kind of sacred song but there are others. not all sacred music is vocal. I only gave one reference; sorry you don't like it.
neutral Angela Dickson (X) : these people seem to sing in choirs - 'song' implies a solo singer in most of these refs.
12 hrs
it's just the name of a type of music. never knew that 'song' implies a solo singer. An aria certainly does......
