French term
une vue de l'esprit
French to English
Social Sciences
Environment & Ecology
Climate change
This sentence is giving me a hard time:
"la très bonne corrélation entre la quantité d’informations circulant dans le monde et la quantité de marchandises transitant sur la planète depuis 150 ans **montre que la dématérialisation de l’économie est une vue de l’esprit**"
Suggestions for the part between the ** much appreciated...

: yes, that's all it means, as in mental construct//expérience & compétence font qu'on ne va plus chercher midi à 14 h! ;-)//comme en politique: surtout ne pas laisser s'imposer la dictature de la majorité (qui est loin d'avoir toujours raison)!!

when so many people think something else you begin to doubt yourself !// L'expérience je l'ai; la compétence: je laisse juger les autres. Mais malgré tout, je doute parfois face à une majorité qui insiste sur des solutions qui ne sont pas bonnes.....

a sensible position
There is a correlation - not an inverse proportion. The more information, the more stuff.
"shows clearly that what really makes our economies go is not mere commodities; it is an increase in the sharing of minds"
Again:
"indicates clearly that economics is more than a matter of commodities; a reduced reliance on commodities is a reasonable position"
These are quasi-interpretations, I know...but you must not say "dematerialization" in English. It's that that requires circumlocution. "esprit" means mind as opposed to physical quantities. The argument probably has to do with the world after we're no longer allowed to waste and destroy it.

Euro-English is a good thing, insofar as it forms part of the necessary harmonisation of bureaucratic expressions, part of the harmonisation of pan-European administration. But when it cuts against the grain of plain speech about important things - when it has no legal or administrative necessity supporting it - then it is a disease that will eventually paralyze the body that produces it.

Proves that the dematerialization of the economy is a mindset
Montrer goes with correlation. mindset goes with depuis 150 ans. I was tempted to translate is as “…is just a question of mindset”.
