French term

composés malodorants

French to English Tech/Engineering Environment & Ecology reservoirs; eutrophication
Are these (see *** below) 'malodorous components' or 'malodorous compounds'.... my dilemma is, are they necessarily compounds? I guess it is the meaning of
'composés' here that is troubling me... slightly ambiguous as it can mean either. Are the things that cause water to smell necessarily compounds....or should I take the safer option and call them components, which could also refer to compounds?!!!

L’usine de potabilisation doit donc faire face chaque été à la présence massive de microalgues et particulièrement de cyanobactéries dont les risques associés sont la présence de ***composés malodorants*** et de toxines dans l’eau brute.

foul-smelling compounds

I have no problem with compounds.

Most perfumes are made from compounds called esters.
Rotten-egg gas is made from a deadly compound called
hydrogen sulfide (H2S).

The microbial decomposition of organic matter, especially the anaerobic breakdown of proteins, with the production of foul-smelling compounds such as hydrogen sulfide and amines.

Peer comment(s):

agree Bourth (X) : Question of tone. Rotting water hyacinth is a "foul-smelling constituent" (or even "matter") in layman's terms, but for the chemist it is due to the "foul-smelling compounds" produced by decomposition of the same water hyacinth.

agree Virgile : in a technical document, compounds would sit better

agree Gabrielle Leyden : definitely compounds

foul-smelling components

I think I'd take the safest option and go for components, as they may not necessarily be compounds, as you say.

Or any of the above with "matter".

As in "Does it matter to you if I take my socks off?"

agree Claire Cox : I like constituents too - and if you'd smelled the dead seagull that my dog decided to roll ecstatically in the other day, you'd know why foul-smelling is so named...
