Spanish term

bien nobles

Spanish to English Other Tourism & Travel
This is very urgent so please make it quick! Thanks ;-)

Discussion

Lisa McCarthy (asker) Dec 19, 2008:
Noble Because of the urgency of the text, I went with the literal translation of 'noble' as it was my only option. I think they just mean that they used materials that didn´t make the place look like a blot on the landscape, that they blended in with the surroundings and the style of other buildings to be found in the Spanish countryside.
Carol Gullidge Dec 19, 2008:
noble wood I know you use "noble" for certain species of tree/wood in flooring, etc, but can't imagine its use for cement/concrete... The mind boggles!
Laurie Price Dec 19, 2008:
well regarded/respected materials such as wood, concrete, etc. -- I wonder if there's a reference to tradition implied in the use of the word "noble" ? And then, would you call the material itself noble? (I think what's noble is their resistance to time) -- time resistent materials ... just a thought, though I see you're in a hurry!
Kate Major Patience Dec 19, 2008:
noble gets used a lot. I shouldn´t have said "expensive" as in this case it wouldn´t apply. I reckon you might get away with "traditional". But really, "noble" is perfectly good standard English term for this context too.

solid and high quality

I'm with you on not feeling happy with "Noble" in English.

Madera noble would be something like "quality hardwood", but since the slate and the concrete are also listed we can't go that way.

I even find the use of "bien" to qualify a little strange, which is why I haven't translated it directly.

I actually stayed in this hotel, and the description fits (the slate walls are a bit OTT in the bedrooms - very dark and powerful).

"high quality"
"top quality"

But really it should be "noble" in English too, I believe.

OK, and on seeing your note... What about "traditional"?
Note from asker:
Yeah, you´re probably right - was just trying to avoid using 'noble'. Not keen on the word for some strange reason :-)

neutral David Ronder : Just one question: is hormigon/concrete a noble, traditional or bio-degradable material in this sense?

Many people now consider it a noble material, though I´m not sure I´d count myself among them! Check out "noble material" +concrete on search engine for other people's opinions. Traditional? Yes, these days I suppose it is. Biodegradable? No idea ;)
