Bei der Destillierung werden Vor- und Nachlauf abgeschieden, um nur das Mittelbrand zu behalten.

I'm also not sure how to translate "Vorlauf" (nor Nachlauf) and have entered that as an additional question.

Vorlauf and Nachlauf are heads and tailing (or first fractions and last fractions if you want a more chemical jargon)
