news reporting on wave of protests in Europe
There is one entry on this in Proz, but they're not using a noun, and it is also 8 years old.

Since the anti-sistemas are ever more in the news, I wonder if the jargon has changed in the meantime.
The term has arisen in conversation about trouble in the streets of Barcelona during the recent general strike, not in a written text, for a student in the middle of taking the diplomatic service exams (he has just taken the translation component) who may need to use it in interview.
"Anti-capitalist protesters" is what I've found, but I wonder if there is anything shorter/snappier. Maybe not.
Any comments? Thanks very much.

anti-capitalists
because capitalism is the system in question.
I would argue that the standard UK media term is 'anti-capitalist demonstrators' (or protesters as you suggest, or activists, or ...) but this will do if you want it snappy.
Google images for the term:

It is those guys, isn't it?
A couple of other examples:

26 Mar 2009 ... Security will be stepped up around fat-cat bankers after the home of disgraced former RBS boss Sir Fred Goodwin was targeted by vandals.

'Anti-establishment' is not quite the same thing and I feel belongs to another era.

Comment: "The reasoning that it is not just anti-govt, and that anti-capitalists is a more up-to-date term than anti establishment have led me to plump for this one. Thanks everyone."

protestors / picketers

A bus is stopped by picketers in Barcelona at the begining of ....
The unified picket from Plaza Catalunya, ...
Picketing was serious and effective and it was clear that workers were not sitting back ...

Note from asker:
Thanks Yaiza! It does look as if we are going to have to take a step down in the force of the term. |

: No, these are protesters vehemently opposed to the existing system, not mere picketers

Anti-establishment
Broader than "anti-government" (encompasses the political system not just the particular government in power), but less generic than simply "protesters".

It's not meant to be capitalized--autocorrect on my iPhone :). Also you can combine with "protesters".

Also, I wouldn't recommend "anti-capitalist" unless you know they were specifically protesting against capitalism or were generally left-leaning.

is another possibility where the notion of protesting may be implied.
Not any shorter or snappier than your suggestion of anti-capitalists which I've heard many times on the new too.
