French term

Construire une relation c’est se souvenir des interactions

French to English Marketing Internet, e-Commerce CRM
Context: this is the headline for a PPT slide, presentation is about Customer Relationship Management
Idea : the full idea is "Construire une relation (avec client) implique/suppose/nécessite de se souvenir des interactions (qu'on a eues avec lui)"
Constraints : the shorter the translation, the better.

Discussion

philgoddard Oct 8, 2012:
I think everyone except kashew is missing the point slightly. This is about customer relationship management software, which keeps a record of all customer contacts. "Se souvenir de" is the key part of the sentence.

Translators helping translators? I have just looked at the Asker's registration and note that he describes himself as an "End Customer". I have hidden my answer as I don't provide translations for free.

Forging a relationship is built on previous interactions

I like the idea of forging a relationship...
I also like the idea of a relationship being built on previous interactions...
And it is about the same length as the French phrase

Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : i don't think you've really translated "se souvenir de".

Granted - but the idea of built on previous interactions seems to indicate some level of memory of previous interactions... no?
agree Daryo : that's the idea.

thank you!
neutral Nikki Scott-Despaigne : I like "forging" but the construction with "ing + noun" may flow more smoothly with "means building on" rather than "is built". It maintains the idea of continuity and conveys an idea of "se souvenir de".

Remembering previous interactivity is essential in building a relationship

Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : I don't think "interactivity" is quite right, though - "interactions" would be easier to understand. "Keeping a record of" might be an alternative to 'remembering".

Thanks - sure, it needs work!

When building a relationship, value/treasure past interactions

My take on it, value/treasure or other synonyms, a bit stronger than remember, and it's short too

Memorable interactions are the building blocks of a relationship

'Building blocks' since the more that have taken place, the stronger the relationship.

Alternatives to 'interactions': exchanges, communications, discussions, dialogues (as appropriate).

'Memorable' (or unforgettable, etc) is a useful way of conveying the "se souvenir de".

Building a relationship means building on interactions/previous exchanges/the past.

Another take on this. I like "forging" so have avoided using that one again - which I do prefer. However, now I have adopted a suggestion which is very close to the French original with "build", I've deliberately gone for a repetition. "Se souvenir" is an adequate justification for repetition, recalling the past. I have given three suggested endings for the sentence :
- interactions (close to the original, but arguably less natural in English)
- previous exchanges (similar idea, a slightly more natural rendering)
- the past (short, simple, to the point, a slight distance from the original, but if a neat stand-alone rendering is needed, i may work well).
