English term

imprisonment meetings

English Law/Patents Law (general)
Hello everyone,

The prison has been planned and arranged in such a way that ICT will be a natural tool for staff and inmates. The goal is that the inmates in XXX prison will be able to make use of ICT from their own room, in communication with the prison. A number of different trainings and work-related activities will be organized where ICT is used. Opportunities for communication out of the prison with the help of ICT have also been arranged for. Equipment for video-conferencing may be used for contact with relatives or defense lawyers, and for court cases and **imprisonment meetings**

Does "imprisonment meetings" imply internal video-conferences for and between prisoners themselves?

Thank you.

Mikhail Korolev (asker) Nov 4, 2012:
Another idea occurred to me. Maybe "imprisonment meeting" (in my text) is a video transmitted from the court to the prison?
Mikhail Korolev (asker) Nov 4, 2012:
Well, I managed to find one example of "imprisonment meeting", but I have to admit it's of no help for me.

Arslan Maroof Ubaydullah Hussain was arrested Thursday after police had first raided his residence at Bjerke. Hussain has been reviewed for two threats against journalists working in the Norwegian national media. Imprisonment meeting started at Oslo District Court on Saturday afternoon.

In this particular example "Imprisonment meeting" sounds to me as a usual court session/hearing while in my text 'imprisonment meeting' definitely takes place in the prison.

* This sounds like the kind of thing you have to work there to know what it is. The phrase (to me) doesn't imply anything one way or the other to say what kind of meetings these are. There's not a single Google reference. I wonder if it was supposed to be "in-prison" meetings and was "corrected" by the spellchecker.

meetings related to their imprisonment

not over confident but feel it has to be about the terms and conditions of their imprisonment, eg whether they get compassionate leave, paroe, training etc. It just seems to be logical as it follows "court cases" and it could be a way for prisoners to discuss these issues with their legal team and any other interested parties such as welfare officers (wives and children get allowances?). It would mean that the prisoner could consult more easily and much more quickly as no one has to actually arrange a (physical) visit to the prison

The way I read it. Hope it helps!

oops typo above should be paroLe of course.

Yes, for me "defense lawyers" are for while the court case is actually taking place. I mean the legal people and welfare officers (for their families) AFTERWARDS (as they are now in prison) or if they are putting in an appeal or looking for leave or transfer to another prison or whatever...

I'm thinking of more general discussions regarding their time in prison.

glad to have helped. If you are translating this I would keep to a very direct literal translation as there is lack of clarity in English as to what exactly these meetings are about.
Note from asker:
Well, that interpretation seems logical to me as well, except for one thing - I think legal team was mentioned earlier - Equipment for video-conferencing may be used for contact with relatives or defense lawyers
Now I see your point, thank you.

orientation fot someone who will be serving a sentence in the facility

In-prison meetings would be meetings between people/prisoners in the facility

Perhaps this is a meeting for an incoming prisoner to introduce him to rules and regulations of the prison as well its physical layout, dining room, exercise area, infirmary, etc.
