Tapered Sliding Dovetail
The strongest connection is to dovetail the
shelf to the case sides, tapering the joint along
its length.
Cut the tapered dovetail sockets in the case first.
Use a shopmade jig (A, B) to guide the router
and a 1/2-in. dovetail bit. To reduce tearout, rout a
notch into the back edge first, before routing the
full width of the panel (C).
Next, tape 1/32-in.-thick shims to both sides of the
shelf stock (D).
Using the same bit you used to cut the socket,
rout the pin by making one pass on the router
table on each side of the stock. Be sure to rout in
scrap first to fine-tune the fit, moving the fence
in or out from the bit, or adjusting the shim thickness,
until the widest part of the tail almost—but
not quite—fits into the wider end of the socket.
Beams clamped to the stock remove any possible
warp (E).
The dovetail pin should tighten as the joint is
brought home. Having to tap the last 1⁄2 in. into
the socket means a tight-fitting joint. Glue is
optional, although with solid wood it’s a good
idea to glue about 2 in. at the front of the joint
to keep the shelf flush with the case despite any
wood movement (F).
