As you can see in the references, this was said by Ralph Waldo Emerson.

neutral Intergraf : If the last Emerson quote I found is correct, then what he actually said was "what you are" - and all the other "quotes" we found are just catchier paraphrases of what he really said. ;-)

I can deal with "what you are", but "what you do" or "your actions", well, that's a different story, and a different saying: "your actions speak louder than your words".

Spanish term (edited): El cmo eres me grita tanto al odo

What you are doing is so loud that I can't hear what you are saying

At least, that's a popular signature on some news lists...

This may be the origin of it:

\"What you are is so loud that I can\'t hear what you say.\" - attributed to Thoreau (they couldn\'t spell it, though).

This one seems closer to the mark:

Well, I think I may have finally found the original Emerson quote:

Results from Internet Collections: alt.quotations Archives:
\"Don\'t SAY things. What you ARE stands over you the while, and thunders so that I cannot hear what you say to the contrary.\"
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882), Social Aims

Perhaps the other versions found all over the place are catchier paraphrases of this one. This is the only one I\'ve found so far that gives the title of an Emerson work as the source.

I found it by searching for \"I cannot hear what you say\" (I figured Emerson didn\'t say \"can\'t\") at The Quotations Page - http://www.quotationspage.com

Found confirmation of this last, longer quote at bartleby.com :

NUMBER: 20935
QUOTATION: Things said for conversation are chalk eggs. Don’t say things. What you are stands over you the while, and thunders so that I cannot hear what you say to the contrary.
ATTRIBUTION: Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882), U.S. essayist, poet, philosopher. “Social Aims,” Letters and Social Aims (1876).
BIOGRAPHY: Columbia Encyclopedia.
WORKS: Emerson Collection.

So it does seem like all the others have been paraphrased and condensed from this one...

True. But that was one of the versions I found. Apparently, what Emerson really said was "what you are" - if this last quote I found is really the source of it. ;-)
